Ratmalana Airport – Colombo Airport
The Ratmalana Airport, which is also known as Colombo Airport is the second largest international airport in Sri Lanka after the Bandaranaike Airport. It is a major airport majorly serving domestic flights and military operations. The airport gained the international status only in the year 2012 and has been available for commercial jet operations from August 2012. Located just 16 km from the main city, the Ratmalana Airport is much closer to the city centre as compared to Bandaranaike Airport.
At present, there are 2 terminals at the Ratmalana Airport – terminal 1 is for passenger and terminal 2 is for cargo services. Ground handling, immigration services, quarantine, baggage and passenger screening, re-fuelling and VIP lounge are among the ground services presently available at the airport. The airport serves as base to the low cost airline Helitours, airlines which are operated by the Sri Lankan Air force. Renovations and up gradation are being down is various phases across the Ratmalana airport to make it an international city airport which will serve private jets and small aircraft. The government has proposed repair to the runway and reconfiguration to the aerodrome, improvements to the existing terminal building, taxiway and apron, reconfiguration to the aerodrome as a short-term development project for Ratmalana Airport.
