Rotterdam The Hague Airport, which is simply known as Rotterdam Airport is a major airport serving city of Rotterdam along with The Hague and its surroundings. This is the 3rd largest airport in Netherland and is located at a distance of 5.6 km north northwest of Rotterdam. The airport is operated by Schiphol Group and serves as a focus city for Transavia. The airport is situated at an elevation of -4 meters above sea level and has 1 asphalt runway measuring 2,200 meters. The airport is favored destination for the European and leisure travellers and the airport recorded 1.5 million passengers traffic in 2013. The Rotterdam The Hague Airport came into existence in the year August 1955 when the government felt the need for the construction of a second national airport after Schiphol. The city had an airport before called Waalhaven airport but it was completely destroyed during the Second World War. The Rotterdam The Hague Airport was officially opened for public in 1956 and was called Zestienhoven and Swissair, Lufthansa and Air France began services from the airport. The airport remained closed for more than 30 years but the economic growth in 1990’s lead to an increase in passenger numbers thus the airport restarted its operations. The current name was given to the airport in 2010.
