Qingdao Airport – China’s Major Airport

Serving the city of Qingdao in China’s Shandong Province, Qingdao Airport is a major international airport that is operated by Qingdao International Airport Group Co., Ltd. and it is officially known as Qingdao Liuting International Airport. The airport is located at a distance of 31 km from the city centers and is at an elevation of 10 meter above mean sea level. The airport serves as hub for Qingdao Airlines and is the focus city for China Eastern Airlines and Shandong Airlines. The airport was the 12th busiest airport in China during the year 2012 when it recorded 12,601,152 passenger movements.  Currently the airport has single concrete runway measuring 3,400 meters. The government is planning to replace the existing airport with Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport, and the construction plan for the new airport was approved by the Chinese Government in December 2013.


The airport was officially opened for public on August 5, 1982 and has been regularly upgraded and expanded to accommodate the growing demand of the travellers. The airport underwent massive expansion and renovation from 2004 to 2006 and by the year 2010, the airport had a capacity of handling 5.2 million passengers annually, which means that 2400 passengers and almost 120,000 tons of cargo can be dealt hourly at the airport. New terminal parking space, public telephones, clinic and numerous facilities were added to make travelling at this airport a pleasant experience for the passengers. The airport currently has 2 terminals – T1 for domestic passengers and T2 for international travellers.  


The current fleet at the airport includes 37 airline operators that connect the city to more than 50 international as well as domestic destinations across the globe. ANA Cargo, Air Incheon and China Southern Airlines are the Cargo Airline operating to and from the Qingdao Airport.


The airport has been serving the people of Qingdao for more than 30 years now and in spite of offering world class amenities and best facilities, the airport has still not received any awards or recognition.

Presently, the airport serves as base for over 400 flights that includes 191 domestic departure flights, 190 domestic arrival flights, 23 international arrival flights, and 24 international departure flights. Busan, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Xian are the most popular travel routes from Qingdao Liuting International Airport along with numerous other international destinations. Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Kunming, Qinhuangdao, Shijiazhuang and Hangzhou are among the busiest domestic route from Qingdao Liuting International Airport.

How to Check-in

Passengers travelling from Qingdao Airport can avail multiple check-in options. Online check-in and mobile check-in can be done 24 hours before departure and can be done from the comfort of your home. The airport has multiple check-in counters where passengers can check-in. Please note that check-in counters at the airport close 40 minutes before scheduled departure time and in case the passengers is late, then the airline has the right to deny boarding.

Baggage Allowance

The limit of baggage allowance is determined by the airline that the passengers is travelling with and can vary from one airline to the other. However, as a norm most of the airport around the world allow 20 kg of free checked-in baggage for economy class passengers and 30 kg for those travelling in business class in domestic sector. 23 kg for economy and 32 kg for business class is allowed when travelling to international destination. In case of excess baggage, passengers need to pay and price for the same at the airport and the charges is subject to the airline’s policy. Option of luggage storage - luggage shelves and luggage lockers at an additional cost is also available and the luggage service desk is located between T 1 and T 2. 


Those travelling from Qingdao Liuting International Airport can pre book the seat of their choice online, during or after booking their tickets, at an extra cost. Option of pre booking of seat is available from 24 hours before the departure of your flight. It is always advisable to book the window seat as they as they give the travellers a chance to enjoy the views during the plane’s landing or takeoff and are more comfortable. If you do not wish to spend anything extra on booking your seat online then you should arrive at the airport early to request the seat of your choice, however, it is not guaranteed.
