Tuticorin airport is a domestic airport located in the Vagaikulam area at a distance of 17 km from the main city of Tuticorin. This airport serves the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli in South Tamil Nadu. A master plan for upgrading the Tuticorin airport is under progress and 586 acres of land free of any encumbrance has been allotted to the Airports Authority of India towards the same.Plans for expansion of the airport in order to augment passenger aircraft and cargo handling capacities too are under review. Tuticorin is also known as Thoothukudi.
At present only Spice Jet provides flights to Tuticorin. Tuticorin Airport has one asphalt runway, measuring 1351 m in length and 30 m in wide. The airport has a 100 by 60 meters apron which provides parking space for 2 ATR 72 or similar aircraft at a time. Recently, Night Landing facilities have been provided at the airport, facilitating operations of late evening and night flights. To carry out operations for the Indian Air Force and the Indian Coast Guard, an additional 110 acres of land has been allotted to the Airport.
There is only one terminal at the Tuticorin airport which has the capacity of handling a maximum of 72 passengers during peak hours. The airport is well equipped with facilities like baggage services and is wheel chair friendly and there is provision for assistance to aged and physically challenged passengers. Since this is not a very busy airport, there is only a little snack kiosk called Kajah Tea which caters to the passengers. Facilities of trolley and city bus service are available. The terminal has the capacity of parking 130 cars at any time. Flights from Bangalore, Hubli and Chennai are available for Tuticorin airport.
