Tenerife South Airport

Tenerife South Airport – Your way to paradise

Tenerife South Airport in the past known as Tenerife South-Reina Sofia Airport is one of the two airports located on the island of Tenerife and also it is the largest airport that you can find on the Canary Islands. It is located in Granadilla de Abona and thanks to the island natural beauty and breathtaking landscaped the airport is relatively busy taking in account the fact that it is located on an island.

In 2014 over 9 million passengers passed through the airport. It has several facilities such as restaurants, hotels and taxis waiting just outside of the airport ready to take you to your hotel as soon as you arrive on this natural wonder of the world as some people might describe it. The airport has an elevation of 64 meters and it also has one runway which is 3.200 meters long and four functional terminals.

Due to the old airport not being able to face the weather conditions and having to cancel flights often the authorities of Tenerife decided in the late 60s that they need to build a new airport that could handle the passengers that came each year on the island and also an airport that could handle the harsh water that occurred from time to time.

The new airport was finished in the year 1978 and it was officially opened on 6 November in the same year. It was inaugurated by Queen Sofia of Spain to whom the airport was dedicated. The first plane to land on the airport was a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, the flight was registered as IB187 and it took off from Lanzarote and it landed on 10:17. In that year over one million passengers passed though the airport showing that it was not worthless.

The facilities such as the control tower, terminal building or the taxiways were completed in 1977 just before the Tenerife North Airport (the second airport of the island) disaster in March in which two Boeing 747s crushed one into each other on the runway on a Sunday, March 27, 1977, it was the deadliest accident in aviation history resulting in the death of 583 people. This particular incident triggered an alarm signal and more measurements were taken so that Tenerife South Airport wouldn’t witness such a tragic event.

The fleet of the airport consists of aircrafts such as: Airbus A320, Airbus A321, Airbus A330, Airbus A340, Boeing 737.

Ryanair which is an airline with many destinations that take off from Tenerife South has a policy of only using Boeing 737-800 due to its effectiveness. They have over 400 aircrafts and the number is going to increase to over 500 by 2019.

Due to its small size and not having a long history nor any innovative facilities this airport didn’t won any award by now. It is only recognized as being relaxing to travel via it thanks to the landscapes, the fact that it is in a big city and you can go shopping while you wait for your flight. If your flight has been delayed this place is one of the most wonderful places in which it could have happen.
