The Tirupati Airport also known as Renigunta airport is located in the Chittoor district in Tirupati approximately 14 km from the main city. The foundation of the Tirupati Airport was laid on 1st September 2010 and in February 2012 the airport was awarded the status of an International Airport.
To accommodate the heavy traffic rush to this temple city, the government announced the expansion of the airport by 400 acres of land. At present Air India, Jet Airways and Spice Jet are the only flight operators which provide domestic flights to Tirupati from major cities.
At present there is one domestic terminal at the airport which provides facilities like a tea & snacks bar, a book stall and a handicraft stall.The facilities available at the airport also includes free of cost baggage handling facility and wheel chair friendly environment for physically challenged and aged passengers.There are several shopping outlets within the airport which sells ethnic jewelry, local handicrafts, books, newspapers and magazines. Coin operated payphones, security hold area, first aid medical facilities and lost and found baggage services are also available. The domestic terminal at the Tirupati Airport has a parking capacity of 125 cars.
Once the new integrated terminal is operational, the Tirupati Airport will have the capacity to handle 500 domestic and 200 international passengers during peak hours. The new terminal building will be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities. Once international operations begin, pilgrims from neighboring countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka will find it easier to come in large numbers which will help in contributing to Tirupati’s development into a major religious-cum-tourist hub.
