Taipei Taiwan Taoyuan (TPE) – China’s Main Transport Hub

The Taipei Taiwan Taoyuan (TPE) also known as Taoyuan International Airport lies 50 kilometers west of Taipei. It is an international Airport in China serving Taiwan and Taipei cities. China Airlines and Eva Air use the airport as their main hub. Taoyuan International airport became a commercial entity in 1979.

The airport serves more than 150 destinations domestically and internationally worldwide, as at early may 2015. Asia, Europe, and North America are some of the areas the airport’s airlines serve regularly. Taoyuan Airport operates in conjunction with other airports like Taipei Songshan.

Prior to 1979, there were several international airports servicing China. They included Taipei Songshan airport. The location of this airport was limited and could not allow for expansion. A new airport came in place starting from one terminal in February 6-1979.The airport was named after the Chinese President Chiang Kai-Shek as opposed to the planned name, which was Taoyuan.

The airline was purely for commercial services. The space became insufficient, hence the second terminal construction commenced. In July 2000, the second terminal became operational, and Eva air was the first to move in. In January 2005, the other gates were opened and China airlines joined Eva airlines.

The opening of the second terminal led to an increase of the airlines in this airport to over thirty. The increase in number of airlines led to the expansion of the destinations to over 100. The destinations are both code shared while others are seasonal.


The fleet at the Taipei Taiwan Taoyuan (TPE) Airport comprise of Boeing 747-400F, Boeing 777F, Airbus A 330-300, Boeing 737-800, JAL Boeing 767-300, Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A 320-200, Airbus A330-300, Boeing 747-400, and Embraer among others. Helicopters are also part of the airports fleet.

How to Check-In

The following steps are necessary for your check-in:

·         The first step – personal check-in

·         The second step – proceed to check-in

·         The fourth step – proceed to passport control

·         The five step – proceed to board aircraft

To complete the check-in procedures, present your passport and ticket at your specific airline counter. After this, get a seat number and ensure you check-in your luggage. Lastly, make sure you have your checked luggage receipt, boarding card, and identity documents.

Baggage And Allowance

After you are done with the passport control, you need to proceed to the customs lobby. To collect your luggage, wait at the airport’s luggage claim area. If you have a luggage that you don’t wish to pass through customs, you can deposit or leave it at the airport’s bonded luggage counter for collection when you depart.

For luggage that weigh up to twelve kilograms, you will be charged NTD$200. The following are the different charges for the different luggage weights:

·         12 – 22kg  NTD$250

·         22 – 32kg NTD$300

·         32 – 42kg NTD$400

·         Over 42kg and/or high value items NTD$500
