Located in Tulsa County of Oklahoma in the United States, Tulsa International Airport is a joint civil-military airport which is owned by City of Tulsa and operated by Tulsa Airport Authority. The airport is at an elevation of 206 meters above sea level and currently attends to Northeast Oklahoma region. The airport serves as the global maintenance head office for American Airlines and currently houses the 138th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard at the Tulsa Air National Guard Base which is co- located here. The airport has 2 concrete runways measuring 3,048 meters and 2,248 meters and 1 asphalt runway which is 1,860 meters in length. It is a major airport which handles more than 2,840,324 passengers and 116,580 aircraft movements annually. Tulsa Air and Space Museum which is a popular attraction is located on the northwest side of the airport. The airport currently has only 1 small regional terminal and 2 newly renovated concourses. Richard Lloyd Jones Jr. Airport serves as Tulsa airport’s reliever airport. The airport is 8 km northeast of downtown Tulsa.


The airport’s history dates back to the year 1919 when Duncan A. McIntyre, an early aviator, made Tulsa his base and opened a private airport on an 80-acre tract on August 22, 1919. During the 1930’s, the airport merged with R. F. Garland. The airport was known as Brown Airport after many owners who maintained the airport. The airport was a part of Second World War where it was used as the 125th Observation Squadron by 138th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard. After the war, American Airlines took charge of the airport and assimilated two prior Air Force hangars in order to start the maintenance base at the airport. Since then the airport has been renovated multiple times. The airport underwent major renovations between September 7, 2010 and January 18, 2012.
