Wuhan Airport – Central China’s Busiest Airport

Located in the People’s Republic of China, Wuhan Airport is a major airport that primarily serves Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei province in the country. At a distance of 26 km from the main city in the suburban Huangpi District, it is at an elevation of 34 meters above sea level and has a single concrete runway which is 3,400 meters in length. Operated by Wuhan Tianhe International Airport Co. Ltd, it the busiest airport in the Central China and is geographically located in the center of China's airline route network. In the year the airport handled 11,646,789 passengers to become the 14th busiest airport in China in terms of passenger traffic. The Wuhan Airport serves as a focus city for Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines and is also officially known as Wuhan Tianhe International Airport. The airport has 2 terminals, each dedicated for domestic as well as international travellers. From 1st May 2015, the Wuhan International became one of the airports in the country to provide the travellers (from a few specific countries) with the provision of entering the country without a Chinese visa for up to 72 hours.


The Wuhan Tianhe International Airport was officially inaugurated on 15th Airport 1995 and the name Tianhe means Sky River, which was also among the old names for the Milky Way. The government of China has regularly invested in the renovation and expansion of this airport to make its one of the best airports in the country.


The current facility at the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport serves 26 airlines that connect to more than 90 domestic as well as international destinations with the airport. Air China, Air France, Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Korean Air, Shanghai Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, TransAsia Airways and Xiamen Airlines are the major airline companies operating to and from the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport. Numerous cargo airlines too operate from this airport.

How to Check-in

Similar to the numerous world class airports around the world, the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport too offer multiple check-in option to its passengers. Online and mobile check-in options are available with most of the airline flying out of the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport and can be done 24 hours before the schedule departure of the flight. For those planning for counter check-in, the airport has 72 check-in counters, 20 inspection channels and 17 waiting zones for the convenience of the passengers. Please note that while the check-in time may vary from one airline to the other, counter generally closes strictly 40 minutes before departure and if you arrive any late, the airline has the right to deny you boarding.

Baggage Allowance

The limit of baggage allowance is determined by the airport you are travelling with and can vary from one airline to the other. Best option to speak to your airline to avoid any confusion. However, in accordance with the regulation followed by most of the airports around the world, the dimension of the check-in baggage should not exceed 81cm (H) x 119cm (W) x 119 cm (D) and 32 kg in weight. The limit of baggage that you can check-in ranges between 15 to 32 kg, depending upon the class as sector of travel. As hand baggage you can carry anywhere from 7 kg to 15 kg and this limit too may vary as per your class and travel destination. If you are travelling with excess luggage then you can pay for the same at the airport.


To get the seat of your choice, most airlines offer the options of pre selection of the seat which can be availed 24 hours in advance by paying a nominal fee. You can also make a request at the airport for your preferred seat, but during counter check-in seats are subject to availability, hence not guaranteed.
