The airport is located in the south end of the city, 10.2 km south of downtown Ottawa, Ontario in Canada. This Airport holds the sixth position by airline passenger traffic in busiest airports list and fifth busiest by aircraft movements. The airport is an Air Canada focus city. It is also the home base for First Air.

History

The airport was originally opened at the uplands on high plateau then south of Ottawa, by the Ottawa Flying Club. The Flying Club still operates from the field. The airport hosted No.2 Service Flying Training School for the British. Commonwealth Air Training Plan during World War II and that time it was known as Uplands. Over years, the airport went through expansions and new constructions. In 1950 it went under southward expansion in the year 1959 Terminal building was scheduled to open but due to the United States Air force F-104 Startfighter which passed over the airport resulted in sonic boom. This caused severe damaged to the structures and buildings of the airport and the opening was delayed until April 1960.

Since then, Ottawa international airport has been serving its people, carrying them to their desired destinations.

Fleet

The airport focus city for Air Canada and Porter Airlines. But formerly, it served as a military base known as CFB Ottawa south/ CFB Uplands.

Moreover, back in times, the airport provided advanced pilot training in Harvard and Yale aircraft. At present, it serves around the clock with its two terminals built with desired specifications and precisions.

Expansion of airport's passenger terminal was approved by the board of directors on April 4, 2006. And the old terminal was demolished by the end of 2008. This paved way for the creation of more gates and jet ways.

Ottawa International Airport is the part of Canada's busiest air corridor between Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. This is commonly referred to as the Easter Triangle.

Specially branded flights between Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa are called Rapidair. The airport serves not only North American Airlines but it also has flights to Europe, Caribean and Unites States, making its range wider. This also serves as a gateway for the flights to the eastern Artic via Iqaluit.
