Montreal Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport: A Gateway into Canada

Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport is a public airport owned by Transport Canada and it serves Greater Montreal. The airport has been named after the 15th Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliot Trudeau. It is the busiest port in the Quebec Province and the fourth busiest airport in Canada. It is located 20 km from Montreal’s downtown core on the Island of Montreal, albeit the suburb of Dorval holds the airport terminals and the Air Canada Headquarters and a runway is located in Saint-Laurent Montreal.  It’s one of those Canadian airports which have United States Border clearance and main gateway into Canada.

The Montreal airport was established in theyear 1940and commenced its first flight in the following year when the Montreal airport opened on 1st September 1941. Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport was originally named Dorval Airport with three paved runways.

Montreal’s earlier airport Saint Hubert Airport could not meet increasing demands and was not adequate to meet the needs of the city. Henceforth, Dorval Race Track was purchased by the Minister of Transport. The good weather conditions and few foggy days made it the best location for the airport. It also served as a onetime Major Transatlantic hub for commercial aviation.

Since its inception it has served millions of passengers and it still does.

By 1946 it hosted more than a quarter of a million passengers, the statistics increased to more than a million in mid-1950s. During World War II it served thousands of Allied Aircrafts headed towards England. It also served flights from British Overseas Airways Corporation.

It offers it’s around the clock flight services to four continents including Asia, Africa, North America and Europe.

It has categorized its flights in three different categories depending upon the destination.

Ø  The DOMESTIC FLIGHT is one within Canada.

Ø  The TRANSBORDER FLIGHT is between Montreal and destination in the USA

Ø  The INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT is between Montreal and destinations not within USA.

International flights as well as Charter flights were scheduled to return to Montreal-Dorval in 1997and 2004, respectively. Due to this consolidation of flights an elevation in passenger traffic was observed and the airport became a Hub. This change in flight scheduling made it easy to connect through Montreal.
