Zanzibar Airport – Zanzibar’s Beautiful Airport

The Zanzibar Airport, which is officially known as Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is among the most beautiful airports in the country. Located at a distance of 5 km from the city, it is at an elevation of 16 meters above sea level and is currently owned by Government of Zanzibar and operated by Zanzibar Airports Authority. Scenically located on the Unguja Island in e Zanzibar Archipelago, the airport has a single asphalt runway which measures 3,007 meters. The airport was earlier known as Kisauni Airport and Zanzibar International Airport and was renamed as Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in 2010 to honor the first president of the island, Abeid Amani Karume. In the year 2009, the airport recorded 539,200 passenger movements. The airport currently has 2 terminals that have the capacity to serve 1.5 million passengers annually.


The airport has been operation for many years and has been renovated and expanded multiple times in the past. The airport is being renovated since 2011 and the official inauguration of the new airport took place on 4th January, 2015. The inauguration was done be Zanzibar’s President, Ali Mohamed Shein. Currently the airport expanded parking apron and extended and resurfaced taxiway along with an expanded terminal (work of which will complete by the end of 2015). Since its inauguration, the airport has seen significant rise in the number of direct flights from abroad, thus helping the country to become a major tourist destination.

Astral Aviation and Kenya Airways Cargo are the cargo airlines which operate from the airport.


Though Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is among the major airports in Zanzibar, till now it has not received any award or recognition for its outstanding service rendered towards the upliftment of the civil aviation sector of the country.

How to Check-in

Online check-in option is available with most of the airline flying to and from the Zanzibar International Airport. This service is free and can be availed 24 hours before the departure of the flight.
