What to see and do
Singapore is a small country but definitely big in ambition. This country is fast becoming a major tourism hub, not just because of its easy accessibility to other Southeast Asian countries but also because of its introduction of many new attractions such as the integrated resorts. The arts and music scene attracts large numbers of international acts, and the Formula One night race is now well established in the country.
Singapore is a food paradise. Singapore’s hawker food is ubiquitous and worth a try when you visit this bustling cosmopolitan city. There’s really no better way to get into the Singapore pysche than through its huge variety of cuisines. Be prepared to sweat it out over steaming plates of yummy local favourites.
If you worship the gods of retail, be sure to make your way to Orchard Road where thousands of shops are spread out across 22 (and counting!) malls. Literally shop till you drop at some futuristic-designed malls such as ION Orchard or Paragon. Hunt for Indian and Tibetan antiques or barter for an oriental rug at Tanglin Shopping Centre. If you feel tired after shopping, head to the Botanic Gardens to unwind after a long day. Thirsty after all that shopping? Chill out over a cup of fragrant Turkish coffee or a bakalava shake at Café le Caire, before heading for some nice cool beer at Blu Jazz where you can sheesha while listening to live music.
Ride the spectacular cable car from the summit of Mt Faber or take the skytrain into the iconic Sentosa Island. Home to Southeast Asia’s first Universal Studios theme park and one of two integrated resorts in Singapore, visitors will be able to enjoy a wide array of exciting world-class attractions and activities. Spend the whole day being greeted by popular universal studio characters such as Optimus Prime and the Sesame Streets clan or screaming away on thrill-seeking rides. Head to the world’s largest oceanarium Marine Life Park, which consists of the S.E.A Aquarium and the Adventure Cove Waterpark. For a lovely time on the beach, head to Palawan Beach or Siloso Beach. There are volleyball courts, water sports and beach activities to look forward to here. For those wanting peace and quiet, Tanjong Beach is the place to go. Tanjong Beach Club offers stunning beachfront dining, great for couples looking to spend quality time together.
From the airport, visitors would be able to reach the city centre conveniently by the train which can be taken directly from below the airport terminals. Visitors would be able to reach the heart of the centre within 35 minutes. Alternatively, there is a shuttle bus which departs hourly from the airport to the city. It is cheap and convenient for travellers carrying heavy luggage.
Within the city, visitors can purchase an EZ-link card, a credit card-sized electronic card that you can use on MRT trains and local buses. The most convenient way to get around is via the local subway but it only runs from 6 am until midnight. The buses go everywhere the trains do and more. There are night buses from the city. Taxis can be rather expensive. Don’t be surprised by the hefty surcharges during peak hours and from midnight onwards.
