Cricket World Cup 2019 – All you need to know

It’s finally that time of the year when you eagerly watch your favourite cricket teams battling it out for the coveted World Cup prize. Yes, you’re right! We are talking about the much awaited and talked about 2019 World Cup. Read Skyscanner’s guide to know more about the tournament.

History of World Cup

The first ever world cup was in 1975 four years after the one-day cricket matches garnered plenty of eyeballs. The world cup was ICC’s official response to the world cricket series that many fans looked forward to. In the last four decades, the world series held across the world with as many teams winning them. The twelfth tournament outing will be the fifth to be played in the UK after 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1999 earlier. If you’ve always wanted to watch your personal favourites live at the World Cup 2019, then now is the time to start planning your trip to the UK.

Hosts for World Cup 2019

England and Wales won a joint bid to host the popular international cricketing tournament nearly a decade ago in 2007. Held every four years, the World Cup tournament was initially invitation only. However, once all twelve members accepted the invitation to play, the ICC granted it official status.

World Cup Dates

Starting 30th May 2019, the final match will be at Lord’s in London on 14th July 2019

Qualification for the World Cup 2019

The ICC decided to reduce the size of the tournament this year. Only 10 teams will qualify for the World Cup 2019. Earlier there were 14 teams taking part, however, ICC believes fewer teams will make for a better cricket battle. The England team qualifies automatically since they are the hosts along with the top 7 one-day international nations Australia, South Africa, India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan based on the latest ICC rankings considered six months before the tournament. Afghanistan and West Indies took the remaining two spots after the qualifying round held in March.

World Cup Format

The World Cup tournament format this year is much simpler than before considering there are only 10 teams competing this year. With one group of 10 teams, each team will play each other once i.e. there will be 45 group games in all. There will be no quarterfinals and the top 4 teams will directly enter the semifinals. Winners of the semifinals will play for the final world champion trophy.
