History and Architecture: The region was inhabited by indigenous tribes. The first European landed herein 1516. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it was firmly under Spanish rule. In 1806 the British invaded Buenos Aires. In 1880, the city was federalized. It became the seat of government, and a Mayor was appointed by the President. The city is the best place to see Spanish colonial architecture. Cabildo on Plaza de Mayo is a great example. The city is also home to Art Noveau Italian Renaissance styled architecture.
