Climate: Osaka has a subtropical climate and experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are very hot and humid. In July and August, temperature reaches 35 °C (95 °F). Winters are mild, with temperature dropping to 9.3 °C (49 °F). The rainy season lasts from May to early July. The best time to visit is spring.
Food: Osaka is world renowned for its food and sake. Regional delights include Okonomiyaki (pan-fried batter cake), Takoyaki (octopus dumplings), Udon (a noodle dish), oshizushi (pressed sushi), and Battera (pressed mackerel sushi).
Culture: Osaka has a beautiful traditional vibe. The people of the city are polite, humble, hardworking, and helpful. They celebrate many festivals with gusto including the Tenjin-matsuri Festival that is held at Ikukunitama Shrine every July. Other festivals in Osaka include the Aizen-matsuri, Sumiyoshi-matsuri, Sumiyoshi taisha, Shōryō-e, and Tōka-Ebisu.
History and Architecture: The city witnessed three distinct periods during its illustrious history. During the Kofun period, Osaka developed into a hub port connecting the region to the western part of Japan. During the Asuka and Nara period, Emperor Kōtoku built his Naniwa Nagara-Toyosaki Palace in the city and made it the capital of Japan. The Edo period from 1603–1867, saw Osaka grow into an important port and strategic city. The modern City of Osaka was established in 1889 by government ordinance. The architecture of the city combines traditional and contemporary elements. Osaka Castle is a fine example of traditional architecture, while Moerenuma Park, Benesse House, and Umeda Sky Building are dazzling modern marvels.

Be sure to check out the shōtengai shopping arcades, which are located both above and underground. For electronics and anime/manga comics, Den Den Town and Umeda are an ideal bet.
