OnCandlemas Day (Candelaria), the streets come alive with colourful parades. On the Day of the Dead, the inhabitants maintain vigils at the cemetery and offer prayers for the departed souls. Another festival Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla.

It served as the political, administrative and financial centre of the Spanish colonial empire. After independence, the Federal District was created in 1824.Under the rule of Porfirio Díaz, Mexico City saw major expansion and urbanisation.
