Discover Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, or Atlanta Airport or Hartsfield in short, is the busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger traffic. The airport is a major aviation hub for travellers venturing into and out of the Southeastern United States. Apart from domestic flights, the airport serves international travellers as well to destinations across the globe.

Getting Around

Downtown Atlanta is approximately 16 kilometres from the airport, and various modes of transport are available to take you there. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), comprising train and bus services, offers transport to the city centre. The MARTA rail system connects Atlanta Airport to the Five Points Station, where five lines branch out to other parts of the city. The comprehensive bus network also takes travellers from the airport to downtown Atlanta, as well as to other destinations in the area. Otherwise, arrange for an airport shuttle or take a cab to the city centre.

Getting around Atlanta city is easy with public transport. Most popular tourist attractions are accessible via the MARTA rail system. However, to reach landmarks in the suburban areas, visitors may want to opt for car rental. Driving around makes places like the White Water Park and Gwinnett Arena reachable, but be prepared to wait out traffic jams – and even lose your way several times – trying to get there. In Atlanta, areas are neither organised in a grid system nor labelled logically, and dozens of streets are named Peachtree. Taking a taxi, therefore, may be more viable for travellers looking to reach their destinations quickly.

What to See and Do

One of the top attractions in Atlanta is the Fox Theatre, an Egyptian-themed multi-purpose performing arts centre. The theatre houses the Atlanta Opera and the Atlanta Ballet, while Broadway musicals and various bands make guest appearances. Watch a performance and be dazzled by the vibrant colours, interiors designed by expert artisans, and the dynamic ceiling featuring revolving clouds and stars.

Visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, a significant monument that documents the history of the United States. Step into the humble residence of Martin Luther King Jr., the revered leader of the Civil Rights Movement. Walk over to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King used to preach as a pastor. Learn about his story through engaging exhibits, and arrive early for the MLK house tour (provided on a first-come, first-served basis).

Another historic landmark not to be missed is the Atlanta History Center. The museum recounts Atlanta’s interesting past, from Native American culture to life in the antebellum south. Nearby is the Swan House, which, like its name suggests, has at least one swan motif in each room of the building. Walk down the Swan Woods Trail, flanked by flora native to Georgia. A short distance away is the Tullie Smith Farm, a plantation house from the mid-1800s.

For a great afternoon spent picnicking with family and friends, playing sport, or simply lazing around, head to Piedmont Park. You may be able to catch an ongoing special event or festival happening in the park, and buy snacks from food vendors opening during those hours. Go biking, jogging, or strolling, and play soccer, bocce, and more in the designated sports areas of the park.
