Don Muang International Airport is one of two international airports serving Bangkok, alongside Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is regarded as Asia’s oldest operating airport, and is the main aviation hub for Nok Air, AirAsia, One-Two-Go by Orient Thai Airlines, and more. The airport serves both domestic and international travellers, connecting Bangkok to other parts of Thailand, as well as to the rest of the world.
Getting Around
The airport is an estimated 24 kilometres away from the city centre. At present, the fastest and most convenient way to reach downtown is by taxi. Otherwise, take the bus to the Siam area, the cheapest mode of transport available. However, note that bus rides take a longer travelling time than cabs, and there is limited space for luggage, especially during peak hour. Another option is the train; however, train services are infrequent and will be packed with passengers travelling to and from Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Driving a rented car is dangerous for those unfamiliar with Bangkok’s busy roads. It may be better to stick to taxis instead.
Similarly, taxis are a quick and hassle-free way to get around the city. Choose the tuk-tuks for a more touristy travel experience. These colourful tuk-tuks, formerly a prominent Bangkok attraction, are gradually vanishing in favour of more comfortable forms of transport; catch them before they completely disappear. Instead of braving the notorious road conditions and ubiquitous gridlock traffic, travellers may prefer to commute by public transport. Board the Skytrain (BTS) and utilise the underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail network to get to your destinations.
What to See & Do
There are several must-see attractions in Bangkok. Marvel at the stunning silhouette of the legendary Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn), one of the most striking riverside landmarks of Thailand. The stupa is adorned with an ornate floral pattern, crafted in glazed porcelain. Another religious attraction is the Grand Palace and Wat Prakeaw, boasting breathtaking architecture and beautiful sights. Inside the Wat Prakeaw, view significant religious images like the sacred Emerald Buddha, carefully carved from a single block of emerald.
Shop at the leading floating market, Damnoen Saduak. Even if you are not interested in bargaining or buying anything, exploring the market is still an interesting experience not to be missed. Take a guided tour of the market in a boat, and float past various food vendors marketing their goods. Sip on refreshing coconut juice, and savour some local delights while making your way through Damnoen Saduak. Other floating markets include Taling Chan Market, Bang Ku Wiang Market, and Tha Kha.
If floating markets are not for you, fret not! Bangkok is a food and shopping paradise, teeming with massive shopping malls and countless roadside stalls awaiting your discovery. Popular malls include the famous MBK, the trendy Siam Discovery and Central World Plaza, the air travel-themed Terminal 21, the open air Asiatique The Riverfront, and plenty more, not forgetting the legendary Chatuchak Weekend Market, often talked about for excellent shopping and great food.
