Geneva Cointrin International Airport serves the city of Geneva, the second most populous city in Switzerland and capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. One of the best airports in Europe, it is interestingly located on the Swiss-France border, resulting in some confusion - part of the airport compound is technically in France, while the other part is in Switzerland. As such, the airport is split into the French sector and the Swiss sector, and proper identification documents are required to pass into each side from the other.

The airport sports only one terminal but serves close to 50 airlines that fly to about 100 destinations worldwide, and handles more than 13 million passengers yearly.

Getting around

Located about 5km from Geneva, transportation to and from the airport is very easy. Passengers have the option of taking the train, bus or taxi, and are even able to claim a free Unireso ticket for 80 minutes of public transport in the central Geneva area upon arrival.

Considered the fastest public transport option into the city, the train connects the airport to Gare Cornavin Railway Station located in the heart of Geneva city. From there, getting anywhere within the city becomes a piece of cake. The train departs every 10-20 minutes or so, and takes less than 10 minutes to reach its destination. Otherwise, public buses are also available and connect to the Gare Routiere, Geneva’s central bus station, in about 20 minutes.

For those wanting more comfort and convenience taxis are also available outside the airport, and take less than half an hour to reach the city.

What to see and do

Geneva is the centre of the world’s many international organisations - it is perhaps best known for housing the headquarters of the Red Cross, and many agencies of the United Nations (UN). It is also one of the world’s most important financial centres, and sometimes referred to as the ‘Peace Capital’. On top of that, Geneva also boasts one of the highest quality of life measures in the world, though it is also one of the most expensive cities to live in.

If you’re in Geneva don’t miss the city’s iconic landmark: the Jet d’Eau, one of the largest fountains in the world that shoots dozens of litres of water up to 140 metres into the sky. Next, check out the Palais des Nations, the European headquarters of the United Nations and symbol of the capital of peace. Translated to mean the ‘Palace of Nations’, it is built on the sprawling grounds of Ariana Park and overlooks Lake Geneva as well as the French Alps. It is also the site of a buried time capsule as well as the ‘Broken Chair’ monument, and a good place to admire freely wandering peacocks.
