Discover Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria Airport serves as the main gateway to its island situated among the Canary Islands within the Spanish archipelago. It is also frequently recognised as Gando Airport, and sits approximately 18km shy of its city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. As one of the country’s significant gateways providing access into the regional islands, the airport enjoys high levels of both passenger and cargo traffic; especially as a layover destination for flights en route to West Africa. Since its initial inauguration in 1930, Gran Canaria Airport has undergone extensive renovations in order to improve its ability to handle an increasing influx of passengers. The addition of a new terminal and various other facilities like a control tower were examples of the upgrades the airport has received.

Currently, Gran Canaria Airport operates all flights, incoming or outgoing, from two main passenger terminals. Flight operations are segregated by region across both Terminal A and Terminal B-C; namely regionally within the European Union, internationally beyond the European Union, and domestically within the Canary Islands. Airlines found to be docking at Gran Canaria Airport include the likes of Aer Lingus, Ryanair, and Thomas Cook Airlines; which flies out to major destinations such as London, Frankfurt, Tenerife, and Morocco. At the airport, passengers will be able to find a decent selection of amenities as well; such as complimentary WiFi access for up to 15 minutes, banking facilities, a chapel, play facilities for children, as well as an array of retail and dining options to pass your time fruitfully if you are on a long transit. Exclusive lounge services are also offered by the Sala Galdos VIP Lounge in case you find yourself needing a moment of respite before your next flight.

How to get around

Getting from Gran Canaria Airport into the city of Las Palmas is possible with the Spanish island’s efficient transportation system. Passengers travelling on a shoestring budget and prefer taking public modes of transport may consider Las Palmas’ bus services, said to be one of the best within the country. From the airport, passengers can locate the buses outside the arrivals halls; and hop onto Lines 5, 60, or 66, depending on where they’re headed to. Within the city as well, bus services are extensive and frequent, providing an affordable means of moving around during your exploration.

For a more convenient way of getting downtown upon arrival, taxi ranks are also available outside the arrival halls within the airport’s premises. Taxis in the city generally run by the meter, and will take you just about anywhere you need to be.

What to see and do

Although not as prominent as neighbouring islands like Tenerife, Las Palmas is a great destination to consider for a getaway at any time of the year. The Gran Canaria capital boasts favourable weather conditions throughout most of the year, and visitors will be able to enjoy warm sunshine even during the winter months. Las Palmas is especially known for its sunkissed beaches filled with soft sand; with Playa de Las Canteras being the city’s most popular and visited beach. Besides seaside attractions, visitors will unexpectedly find that Las Palmas has more to offer. The city is also home to the charming Vegueta Old Town lined with well-preserved buildings and covered with cobbled streets, which has been officially conferred the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other attractions in Las Palmas to consider adding onto your itinerary include the stunning Catedral de Santa Ana, and the enriching Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno gallery.
