Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport is 9km shy of the city centre, serving as the primary gateway of Madrid, Spain. Although christened after the country’s first Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez for his dedication to the nation, the airport today is more widely recognised as just Madrid-Barajas Airport. As the country’s largest airport in terms of both magnitude and passenger traffic, Madrid-Barajas Airport has grown and gained recognition as one of Europe’s leading airports since its initial inauguration in 1928. Under its wings, Madrid-Barajas Airport covers both domestic operations such as to Barcelona, regional locations around Europe, and international destinations around the world such as Peru, Seoul, New York and Dubai. How to get around within Madrid

From Madrid-Barajas Airport, passengers can get to the city centre via the underground. Madrid Metro Line number 8 will get you to the city (Nuevos Ministerios Station) in about 15 minutes. Passengers who wish to take the metro may make their way to the stations located at Terminal 2 or 4 of the airport. Getting around Madrid is also viable with the metro and very much recommended, as networks are extensive across the city and fares are more affordable.

Another alternative is to take a bus from Madrid-Barajas Airport into the heart of the city. Numerous bus services have included the airport as a prime stop, including the Linea Express which will ferry passengers into Madrid’s centre in approximately 40 minutes. Bus stations are usually located outside the arrival halls, and tickets are to be purchased on board the bus. Within the city too, bus services are reliable and will get you to specific destinations out of reach by the metro.

The airport is also served by local train services, but is more often used by passengers looking to do some inter-city travelling.

Should you prefer private and convenient modes of transport, taxis are always available at the airport and within Madrid proper. At the airport, do board taxis from the official airport stands and use a meter for all journeys. Within Madrid, however, taxis may be flagged off the streets at any time.

Step into Puerta del Sol, which translates into Gate of the Sun. Puerta del Sol is the ideal place to start any exploration of the city, as it is located right in the heart of Madrid. It is also home to Madrid’s most significant clock tower as well as several other monumental statues. Within walking distance is Plaza Mayor, where visitors can take the opportunity to indulge in delectable tapas and refreshing Sangria, all within view of impressive architecture.
