Discover Marrakech Menara

Marrakech Menara Airport is an international airport in Morocco. It is one of north Africa’s busiest airports, managing almost 3 million passengers yearly. The airport was formerly a United States Army Air Force Base during World War II, but has now completely been converted into a civil aviation airbase. More than 50 airlines operate from its gates, catering to travellers from Arabia and Europe, as well as visitors from across the globe.

Getting Around

The airport is situated 6 kilometres southwest of the heart of Marrakech, in central Morocco. To get to the city centre, travellers can choose from options including the public bus, taxi or car rental. Public bus services connect the airport to downtown Marrakech, offering an affordable and convenient way to travel. Otherwise, hail a taxi from the airport to get to the city centre. Car rental is also possible from the automobile companies located at the airport.

Within Marrakech, there are various modes of transport to bring you to your destination. Buses are quite a reliable and inexpensive way to get around, compared to taxis that may try to overcharge foreigners. Board the open-top City Sightseeing bus for a tour of the city, as well as to the outskirts of Marrakech. A unique and romantic way to explore Marrakech is by taking a caleche, a small horse-drawn carriage. Negotiate a reasonable price before setting off -- rates are typically calculated per hour. Alternatively, traverse the city on foot.

What to See and Do

Start discovering Marrakech from the Djemma el Fna, located in the heart of the city. At dusk, the large central square becomes a medieval entertainment centre, complete with jugglers, snake charmers and storytellers. Enjoy local delights from food stalls, and take in the buzz around the area. Adjacent to the square is the Koutoubia Mosque. View the beautiful minaret of the mosque, and watch as the mosque illuminates in the night.

Also beside Djemma el Fna are the markets of Marrakech. Shop your way through the Medina, where hundreds of vendors market lamps, lanterns, hookahs, trinkets, shawls, handmade organic scented soaps, carpets and more. Wander through the labyrinth of stalls, hone your bargaining skills and practise discernment as locals attempt to hard sell their goods. Stay friendly when haggling, but never be pressured into purchasing something you do not like. Discover hidden gems in the vast array of stalls. Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker frequent Aya’s Where, in particular, for kaftans in linen, cotton and silk. Shopping in these souks (open-air markets) is truly an activity not to be missed.

Visit a hammam, a public steam bath in Morocco. Pamper yourself at the Les Bains de Marrakech, or choose the Hammam Ziani for a more budget-friendly service. For a more authentic experience, make a trip to a local working class hammam, typically situated beside a mosque. Enjoying a relaxing steam bath at a local hammam is an eye-opening, cultural experience, and also a great way to interact with the locals.
