Discover Samui International

Samui International Airport, or Koh Samui Airport, is a privately owned airport situated on Koh Samui in Thailand. The unique design of the airport was inspired by nature – everything is open air except for the indoor gift shop. It has two terminals, Domestic and International. Several airlines serve Samui Airport, including Bangkok Airways, China Southern Airlines, SilkAir, Thai Airways, and more to various destinations in the world.

Getting Around

From the airport, take an airport taxi to the heart of Koh Samui. To skip the long queues and prolonged waiting times, book a taxi in advance online. If you are travelling in a larger group, it may be wise to arrange for a minibus instead. Choose reliable providers like Samui Taxi, which take you to Chaweng safely at a flat rate. Or else, opt for car rental.

In Samui, it is convenient to reach the island’s main attractions via various modes of transport. Similar to other islands in Thailand, travellers can rent motorbikes to get around. Bicycles can also be rented cheaply in Koh Samui. The island’s road network is developed and relatively easy to navigate. Otherwise, board a taxi to arrive at your destinations. Public taxis tend to avoid using metered fares, preferring to quote higher prices instead. Some even brandish psuedo-official papers with “fixed” rates, so remember to bargain or risk getting grossly overcharged. Alternatively, take a songthaew, a public pickup truck that serves as a group taxi. The songthaew makes various stops; just push the buzzer to alight. Car rental is least preferred as it is the most expensive form of transport. However, having an air-conditioned car allows visitors to drive to virtually all parts of Koh Samui in comfort – probably worth the price.

What to See & Do

Koh Samui is the second biggest island in Thailand after Phuket, and popular places of interest include Chaweng and Lamai beaches, as well as villages like Mae Nam, Bophut, Bang Rak (Big Buddha) and Choeng Mon.

Be enthralled by the famed Big Buddha sculpture, a grand religious statue towering at 12-metres high. Resting on an elevated platform, this golden sculpture is adorned with dragons and religious symbols, and stands out among the island’s landscape. Explore the rest of the Phra Yai Temple, inclusive of a meditation centre and a mini marketplace selling religious emblems, souvenirs, accessories and more. Have a meal at any of the traditional Thai restaurants in the area. Beyond the temple walls lies the Big Buddha Beach, where you can experience undisturbed relaxation.

Near the Big Buddha Beach is the renowned Chaweng beach, one of Koh Samui’s best beaches. Apart from typical beach fare during the day, Chaweng comes alive after dusk with its happening nightlife scene. Go on a pub crawl, show off your moves at the dance bars, and enjoy exotic cocktails on the beach. Satisfy your hunger pangs at the dining outlets around.

Lamai beach is slightly quieter than its big sister, Chaweng, but still teeming with food, retail, accommodation, and entertainment options. Discover the intriguing Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations, take thrilling rides in the Coco Splash Adventure and Water Park, and take a photograph with the fierce Bengal tigers in the Samui Aquarium and Tiger Show.
