The Moscow Domodedovo International Airport (DME) has been named after the region that it is located in, the territory of Domodedovo. The services of the airport began to be provided in March of 1964, when the flight took the passengers to Sverdlovsk using the Tupolev 104.

The airport had an official opening in May of 1965, when it was ready to handle the increase in long-distance domestic traffic. There was just a single runway back then, and another one parallel to the one that existed was opened about 18 months, post the opening of the airport.

The Domodedovo Airport was chosen to be the airport where the inaugural flight would take place for the Tupolev Tu-144 which was flying top Alma Ata.

The East Line Group invested heavily in the airport facilities which also included the catering services and a brand new customs terminal. The terminal facilities were then privatised by them along with other commercial entities that controlled the operations of the airfield in the airport.

Ever since the year 1998, the air traffic control, runways, as well as, the communication facilities was formally leased out to the East Line Group’s subsidiary.

The Domodedovo airport has a single terminal building, which in turn comprises of a couple of concourses which serve the domestic and the international flights respectively. There is about 22 jetways altogether.

The airport has grown immensely since the first time it was officially opened with just a single runway.
