Darwin International Airport – Darwin’s Only Airport

The only airport serving Darwin in Australia, the Darwin International Airport is the busiest airport in Northern Territory of Australia and is located at a distance of 13 km from the city center. It is a military cum public airport which is operated by Darwin International Airport Pty Ltd (DIA), which is also known as RAAF Darwin. At an elevation of 31 meters above sea level, Darwin International Airport is hub for Airnorth and serves as a focus city for Qantas. Currently 2 asphalt runways measuring 3,354 meters and 1,534 meters grace the Darwin International Airport. In 2012, the airport recorded 1,925,039 passenger and 26,259 aircraft movements, making it the 10th busiest airports in Australia. The airport hares its runway with the Royal Australian Air Force and currently has 3 terminals – 1 international terminal, 1 domestic terminal and 1 cargo terminal.


The Darwin Airport was known as Parap Airfield during the time of its establishment in 1919. It was used by the Allies to project air power into the Pacific during the Second World War and it was handed over to the civil authorities in 1945. From the ear 1950 till 1974 this was the primary airport serving Australia’s Northern Territory and it was also extensively used during the year 1974 when the city was hit by Cyclone Tracy. To assist East Timor region, the Darwin Airport was also used by the UN operations. The airport got a new terminal and in 1991 along with four aerobridges. Since then the airport has been constantly renovated and expanded to make its one of the best airports in the country.


The airport serves as base for Airnorth, Fly Tiwi, Indonesia, Alliance Airlines, AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Jetstar Airways, Jetstar Asia Airways, Tigerair Australia, Philippine Airlines, Qantas, Silk Air and Virgin Australia which operate passenger services to and from the Darwin International Airport.


The airport has still not received any award or accolades for its outstanding contribution towards the civil aviation sector of the country.

From the Darwin International Airport Queensland in Brisbane, New South Wales in Sydney, Victoria in Melbourne and Western Australia in Perth are the major domestic routes. Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam are the busiest international routes from Darwin International Airport. Regular flights are also available from Dili, Bali, Adelaide, Cairns, Manila, Kuala LAmpur, Perth and Alice Springs from the Darwin International Airport.

How to Check-in

Online check-in and mobile check-in are the most convenient options available with most of the airline flying from the Darwin International Airport.
