It is a public airport operated by JSC 'Vnukovo Airport' and serves as hub for Gazpromavia I-Fly, Orenair, Transaero, UTair Aviation, Yakutia Airlines and Pobeda. The airport recorded 11.18 million passengers in the year 2013 making it the he 4th-busiest airport in Russia and post-Soviet states. A dual runway airport, Moscow Vnukovo Airport currently has two terminals wherein Terminal B is used for international flights and Terminal A is used for both domestic as well as international flights and have the total capacity of managing 10,100 passengers per hour. Among all the three airports that serve Moscow, Vnukovo Airport is the highest; hence it often serves as an alternate airport in case of fog.


The airport has been operational since 1937 and is the oldest airport in Moscow. The airport was officially inaugurated on 1 July 1941 and was used as a military airport till Great Patriotic War. The airport began civil services 15 September 1956 and the first flight was bound for Irkutsk via Omsk. The airport was expanded in 1980 as because of the 22nd Summer Olympic Games. A massive strategic renovation at the airport began in 2003 and the airport got a new terminal and a new rail link. At present, Moscow Vnukovo Airport is Europe's busiest airport for international flights by larger private planes. The airport is being currently expanded to make it a highly competitive airport in the country.


Aeroflot, airBaltic, Centre-South, flydubai, Gazpromavia, Georgian Airways, Grozny Avia, Motor Sich Airlines, Severstal Air Company, Turkish Airlines, Vologda Aviation Enterprise and Yakutia Airlines are the major passenger airline companies that operate domestic as well as international flights to and from the Moscow Vnukovo Airport. ATRAN, Grizodubova Air Company, Turkish Airlines Cargo and UPS Airlines currently fly cargo airlines from the airport.


The Moscow Vnukovo Airport has not received any awards till date for its outstanding contribution towards the civil aviation sector of the country.
