Travel hacks for cheap flights:
- Pack light: Before you begin packing ask yourself if you used everything you packed on your last trip. If you’re an over-packer bring your 100% down to 75% or less, e.g. If you want to take 4 pairs of jeans, pack 3 or 2. Consider the length of your stay too. If you are going on a two-week trip, chances are you are going to be doing laundry so pack for a week only. Make sure you always have your items-to-pack list ready before you start putting stuff together. That way you won’t pack too much and you won’t forget anything.
- Pack right: To limit the number of bags you carry, pack right. Use every nook, cranny, compartment and strap in your bag or suitcase. Use organiser cubes or pouches wherever possible, preferably transparent ones so that you can find your stuff easily when you unpack at your destination. Put smaller items together – make up and toiletries in one pouch, underwear and socks in another, travel documents in a separate pouch. Make sure to put heavier items at the bottom so that the weight is well distributed when the bag/suitcase is upright. Roll clothing tightly rather than folding them – it helps you use space well and reduces the creases.
- Don’t unpack: It’s possible to live well out of a suitcase if you have packed correctly. Think about it – if you have packed in a way that allows you to find everything you need easily from your suitcase, why unpack? You save so much time before check out which you can use for that extra swim in the pool!
Travel hacks for best seats:
Seat preferences vary from person to person. While window seats are the most popular as they offer you a view, they tend to be the most restrictive if you need to access the overhead bin or the lavatory. Older people or people travelling with children prefer to have aisle seats as they allow access to the lavatory or to bags without having to disturb other passengers. Taller people look for seats in the front row of each section as they offer more room; and parents travelling with babies who need a bassinet also want those front row seats. If you are looking for a quieter seat, choosing ones at the back of the airplane but away from the lavatories is a good idea.
Travel hacks for budget travel:
If you are one who decides your budget first and then your destination, Skyscanner has a tool to help you find all your options for a destination based on your budget.
Under the ‘Flight’ tab, click the ‘Map’ option on the right. Use the ‘Price’ option to select the maximum figure you want to spend and the ‘Depart’ option to select the month of travel. Skyscanner shows you the map of the world with all the destinations you can fly to on your selected budget. Locations in green indicate direct flights and those in red indicate one or more stops enroute. When you click on a particular destination you can see all the flight options within your budget for that destination.
Travel hacks to travel more:
Stop thinking of travel as one big holiday taken during the year! Instead consider dividing your travel into mini-vacations, and big vacations.
Mini-vacations are the ones you can take close to home over a long weekend. This way you can go on at least four to six mini-vacations in a year. Keep your eyes open for interesting things happening in the cities closest to you. The big vacation could be done once every few years where you plan and save up for that bucket list holiday.
Plan an off-season trip somewhere for cheaper hotel rooms. Travel with friends or another family so that expenses can be split. If you have more time, consider travel by rail rather than air. That way you have different experience at a lower cost.
A mix of mini and big vacations gives you something to look forward to throughout the year.
