The capital of Mizoram, Aizawl is the largest city in the state and is scenically located 132 mts above sea level, with the Tlawng river valley to its west and the Tuirial river valley to its east. The city has been under the ruled of the British for some time and this can be attributed for the cosmopolitan culture that prevails here.

Overview

Owing to the location and elevation of Aizawl, the region experiences mild sub-tropical climate with moderate summers, heavy monsoon and cold winters. The city can be visited all the year round however; the best time is during the month of December when the Pawl kut festival is held here. Mim Kut in September and Chapchar Kut held during February-March are good times to visit, especially if you want to enjoy the culture of the state. The Imphal airport is the nearest international airport linking Aizawl with the rest of the world.

Eating & Shopping

There are not many big and fancy restaurants in Aizawl but the delicious food totally makes up for it. Pork, chicken, wild game meat and rice are hot favorites food in Aizawl. Almost all the restaurants remain closed on Sundays and on weekdays, they close by 6:30 in the evening. 'Bai' which is a type of boiled vegetables, 'Sawhchiar' which is made of rice and cooked with pork or chicken, 'Chhangban' which is boiled rice dough, 'Jadoh', 'Kikpu', 'Tung-toh' and pickled bamboo shoots are popular food items. It is difficult to find alcoholic beverages here except for the 'Zawlaidi' which is a local grape wine and contains roughly 14% alcohol. 

The unique tribal culture which exists in the city is reflective in the local art and craft. Bara Bazar is the main shopping centre of Aizawl in Dawrpui Veng locality and from here tourists can buy varieties of local handicrafts and souvenirs. One can buy cheap and fancy clothes at Zion Street while Millennium Centre is a popular shopping Mall.
