Macau – Holiday in the World’s Richest City

A special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, Macau is among the world’s top tourist destinations. Contained by Guangdong in North and by South China Sea in east and South, the city is home to 636,200 residents in just 30.3 km² of land area, making it the world's most densely populated region. Some of the unique attributes that the city is famous for are - 'very high Human Development Index', 'second highest life expectancy in the world' and 'one of the world's richest cities'. Macau generates more money from gambling than anywhere else in the world. The city has been ruled by Portuguese rom the mid-16th century until late 1999 and it was the last remaining European colony in Asia under the Portugal rule. Macau follows ‘one country, two systems’ rule wherein China manages the military defense and foreign affairs and the legal system customs policy, public security force, monetary system and immigration policy is managed by the Government of Macau. Cantonese Chinese and Portuguese are the official languages spoken in Macau. However, Mandarin, English, Macanese language and Hokkie are other languages spoken in the city.

Overview

All flights coming to Macau, land at the Macau International Airport. This is the primary airport serving the city and it serves as common transfer point for people traveling between China and Taiwan. Having a humid subtropical climate, Macau has an average humidity between 75% to 90% and lot of rainfall. The months from October to December are the popular months for tourism as the temperature is cool and comfortable. Mercury starts dipping from January and till February it is very cold and best avoided. Spring enters Macau in March and this is also a good time to explore the city. Summer begins from May and till September it is very hot and humid. Macau Grand Prix in November, International Music festival held in October, Macau Arts festival in March,  International Fireworks Display Contest in September, Lunar Chinese New Year in January,  Dragon Boat festival in August and  Winter Solstice in December are among the major tourist as well as religious festivals which are celebrated here with pomp and glory.

City Attractions

The city of Macau can be roughly divided into three regions – North, Central and South Peninsula and each region offers unique attractions to the tourists. Portas do Cerco built by the Portuguese in 1970, Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, a popular Buddhist temple and Lin Fong Miu Temple which served as a staging point for travelers to China are all located in North Macau. When in the Northern part of the city do not miss visiting Monumento a Vasco da Gama, Fortaleza do Mong Ha and Lin Kai Miu Temple which are famous for their heritage and beauty.

When in Central Macau Mansao Evocativa de Sun Yat-Sen (a charming Moorish style mansion), Fortaleza do Monte and Macau History Museum (showcasing archaeology and anthropology of Macau), Farol da Guia, Sé Catedral, Camoens Museum, Protestant Cemetery, Ruins of St Paul's Church, Tai Soi Miu Temple, Monumento a Jorge Alvares and Holy House of Mercy are the major sightseeing places. Southern Peninsula is home to some of the most popular religious places and museum and Teatro de Dom Pedro, Ma Kok Miu Temple, Museum Marítimo de Macau, Ermida da Penha and Residência Episcopal and Fortaleza da Barra are among the most popular ones.

Eating and Shopping

The cuisine of Macau is a blend of Cantonese and Portuguese cuisines. The cuisine also incorporates flavors from India, Europe, Africa, South America as well as local Chinese and uses varieties of seasoning and spices. Some of the dishes which are the local specialties you will not find anywhere else are - pato de cabidela, bacalhau, Minchi , caldo verde, feijoada, pastéis de nata,  Portuguese-style egg tart, Galinha à africana, Macanese Chili Shrimps and stir-fry curry crab. While the whole city is abundant with restaurants and eating joints, the Peninsula area as the greatest concentration of variety of restaurants. The coal Portuguese wine and Macau Beer are the most common and affordable drink available is almost every pub. The nightlife of Macau is worth mentioning. While pubs can be found everywhere the ones in Avenida Sun Yat Sen are famous for their western style cafes. Buble tea, which is a fruit flavored tea served with Tapioca balls in worth trying.

A perfect place to shop, Macau is a wonderful mix of the old and new. The swanky malls and uber shopping stores co exist peacefully with the humble neighborhood arcades and pedestrian markets.  Some of the most popular destinations for shopping in Macau are - city center streets around the older casinos, streets between Largo do Senado, Rua da Tercena and New Yaohan
