Discover Xiamen

Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is located on the northern coast of Xiamen Island. The airport boasts passenger services to major cities in North America, Europe, and most of Asia including Hong Kong as well as being well connected to the rest of China. There are flights to over 60 domestic and international destinations from the airport. Indian visitors would be able to take Air China flights and Malaysian Airlines flights from major cities around India to this unique city.

What to See & Do

The loveable city of Xiamen is actually a city comprised of islands. It is found on China’s southeastern coast (Taiwan Strait), in Fujian province. Most people on the island understand and speak fluent Mandarin, but the native language is the dialect of Minnan. Download a translator phone app or buy a simple Mandarin phrases book before arrival. Xiamen city has the feel of a modern and vibrant city and is considered liveable compared to the hustle and bustle of the larger cities in China.

Enjoy Xiamen both in the evening by strolling in the park along Yundang Lake. Visitors will be treated to lit-up artistic sculptures, the scent of the sea and a simple light show in the night. For couples wanting some quiet time together, head down to the Bailuzhou Park where you would be able to enjoy the ambience as well as the music and dancing vendors.

A visit to Xiamen would not be complete without setting foot on Gulangyu Island. There are so many points of interests and spectacular viewpoints to be found here. Stop off at one of the many cafes and restaurants located on the island. This island is also known as the California of China due to its beautiful beaches, fancy restaurants and chilled out bars. There are plenty of cultural activities to get involved in such as the new Xiamen International Exhibition Centre, Arts Centre and Xiamen University. It takes around 10 minutes to reach the island by ferry. The island is completely vehicle-free.

If you are looking for something different to spend your time on, why not take a trip to the Xiamen Piano Museum. This museum is sure to impress, for the sheer size of the collection. The grandeur and design of the artefacts will surely leave you with a sense of wonder.

Getting Around

From the airport, the most convenient way to reach the city centre is via taxis, which can be easily found just outside the arrivals gate. You can also arrange a pick up with your intended hotel, but this must be done prior to your arrival. Taxis to the downtown area generally cost around 30-40 yuan and can take as little as 20 minutes.

It is said that the best way to see the island is to go around by bike, and the island ring road offers a great means of doing so. Rental shops can be found on Huandao Road, and start from 30 yuan per day. Taxis are the quickest form of transport around the island and are not too expensive. Taxis start at 8 yuan for the first 3km, and most taxi fares will come in under 40 yuan, at least during the day. Fares are known to rise at night. The local bus service is also very reliable, comfortable and cheap although English is not used on the route maps or bus. The usual fare starts at 7 yuan. The ferry service for Gulangyu runs frequently and the terminal can be found just north of the Liujiang Waterfront Hotel.
