A beautiful airport serving as base for Insel Air, Divi Divi Air and EZAir, Curaçao International Airport, which is officially called as Hato International Airport is the major airport of Willemstad in Curaçao. The airport was earlier known as Dr. Albert Plesman International Airport and is currently at an elevation of 9 meters above mean sea level. This is a public airport owned by Curaçao Airport Holding and operated by Curaçao Airport Partners. It is one of the largest airports in the region and has the third longest commercial runway after Puerto Rico‘s Rafael Hernández Airport and Guadeloupe’s Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport in the Caribbean region. The airport has only 1 asphalt runway measuring 3,410 meters in length. The airport was a naval airbase of the Royal Netherlands Navy until 2007. The airport is strategically located on the tropical Island of Curaçao and boasts of state of the art infrastructure.


The airport has been serving the country since the Second World War when it was used for conducting antisubmarine patrols by the United States Army Air Forces Sixth Air Force. After the war, it was converted into a civil airport but the airport got is first terminal only in the year 2006. The airport has been repeatedly renovated and has been striving to expand its passenger handling capabilities to 2.5 million passengers per year from 1.6 million. The airport currently employs 200 professionals along with 2000 people in other areas of the airport.


The current facility at the Hato International Airport serves as base for Air Berlin, Air Canada, Aerolíneas Mas, Air Canada Rouge, American Airlines, Arkefly, Avianca, Avior Airlines, Avior Regional, Blue Panorama Airlines, Copa AirlinesDivi Divi Air, Estelar Latinoamérica, EZAir, Insel Air, Insel Air Aruba, JetBlue Airways, KLM, RUTACA Airlines, Sunwing Airlines, Surinam Airways, TAME and WestJet. Amerijet International, DHL Aero Expreso, FedEx Express, Lineas Aereas Suramericanas, Martinair Cargo, Aerosucre and Emirates are the major cargo airlines operating to and from the airport.


In spite of offering state-of-the-art architecture and numerous passenger facility services, the airport still has not received any award or recognition till date.

The Hato International Airport is directly connected to Amsterdam, Aruba, Miami, Newark, Panama, Barquisimeto, Bogota, Paramaribo, Bonaire, Porlamar, Caracas, Port au Prince, Port of Spain, Cartagena, Quito, Charlotte, Dusseldorf, San Juan, Kingston, Maracaiba, Medellin, Toronto, Valencia, Sint Maarten and St Domingo. While most of them are daily passenger flights, some are seasonal flights.

How to Check-in

Mobile check-in and web check-in are available with most of the airline travelling to and from the Hato International Airport or Curaçao International Airport and can be done 24 hours prior to the departure time of the flight. For those opting for counter check-in, there are numerous check-in desks available for the convenience of the passengers. Please make sure you arrive 2 hour before departure of your international flight and 1 hour if you are travelling within domestic sector. Different airline may have different check-in timing, so it is best to check with your airline before travelling. Make sure you arrive within time or else the airline has the right to deny you boarding.

Baggage Allowance

Each airline that operates from Curaçao International Airport has predefined baggage policy and passengers need to consult their airline for more details on what and how much to carry. As a general trend, passengers travelling within domestic sector are allowed to check-in 1 piece at a maximum of 23 kg in economy class and 1 piece at a maximum of 32 kg in business class. When travelling international, business class passengers can check 2 pieces at a maximum of 32 kg and those in economy class can check-in 2 pieces at a maximum of 23 kg. In case of excess luggage, additional charges will be levied and they can be paid at the airport.


Passengers travelling to and from the Curaçao International Airport can pre select the seat of their choice while doing online check-in and it can be done 24 hours prior to departure of their flight. This service is chargeable and the same can be paid online. During the counter check-in, airline do not guarantee the seat of your choice as it is subject to availability. If you want to enjoy enticing views of the region during landing and takeoff then opt for the window seat.

Booking Fee

Most of the airlines offer the option of making flight reservations online, which is a very convenient option but a service fee has to be paid when booking online. Passengers can also buy tickets at the airline counter at the airport or from any authorized office of the airline in their city.
