Flights from Madurai

The city of Madurai lies on the flat and fertile plain of the river Vaigai, which runs in the northwest-southeast direction through the city, dividing it into two almost equal halves. Madurai is hot and dry for eight months of the year. Cold winds are experienced during February and March. The hottest months are from March to July. The city experiences a moderate climate from August to October, tempered by heavy rain and thundery showers, and cool weather from November to February. Temperatures during summer generally reach a maximum of 40°C and a minimum of 26.3°C, although temperatures up to 42°C are not uncommon. The city is famous for its Meenakshi Amman Temple, a venerated site with special significance for Hindus.

In 2012, SpiceJet became the first airline to make an international flight from Madurai Airport to the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. It is believed that the Indian Air Force began operating from Madurai Airport in 1942. When local demand for a commercial airport to serve the southern part of Tamil Nadu grew, civil aviation authorities converted the former air base into a civil airport.

Madurai Airport is 14 km from the city. The best way to get there from the city is to hire a car or by taxi.

Where to go from Madurai

Chennai, the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu, is half an hour’s flight away from Madurai. Chennai is home to many Hindu temples, among them is the Kapaleeswarar Temple, believed to be one of the oldest temples in the city. Situated in Mylapore, the temple is built in the Dravidian style with a giant tower. Chennai has many festivals throughout the year. If you are visiting from mid-December to mid-January, make time for the Dance and Music festival which features Carnatic music and classical dance and attracts scholars from around the world. Also visit Mahabalipuram, 60 km from Chennai. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its ancient sculptures and temples. The Shore Temple is one of its main attractions. Devoted to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, it is carved out of rock and embellished with beautiful carvings.

Hyderabad has a different feel from Chennai. Endearingly termed the Pearl City, it offers monuments, lakes and parks, gardens and resorts as well as museums for the traveller. The Charminar is one of its signature monuments. Built in 1591 to ward off a deadly epidemic raging at the time, it is prettily lit up in the evenings. The Golconda Fort is one of the more well-known forts in India and is famous for its acoustics. Go for the sound and light show there and be taken back in time. If you are interested in ethnic art and craft, Shilparamam is a 30-acre village showcasing the art and craft of the country. A great place to buy a few souvenirs.

You can also fly to Colombo from Madurai Airport. The capital of Sri Lanka is a melting pot of cultures and religions. There is much to see and do in and around Colombo. You can choose to view wildlife, explore the heritage of the country or simply relax on one of its beautiful beaches. You could also take off to the hills – a popular one is Nuwara Eliya -- and enjoy the lush green tea gardens, roaring waterfalls and mild weather.
