The Portuguese gained control over Accra in 17th century followed by Swedish, French and British. The city became the capital of Republic of Ghana in 1877. The city is dominated by tropical savanna climate to semi-arid type of climate and has little variation in its annual temperature. The city remains hot and humid for most part of the year and the months from March to June and September to October receives the highest amount of rainfall. This is not a good time to visit the city as heavy downpour restricts the tourists to enjoy sightseeing or beach activities. The remaining months are comparatively drier and the month of July, August, November, December, January, February and March are good months for tourism.
