Discover Antalya
Antalya Airport serves the city of Antalya in Turkey, a prime holiday destination known for its beautiful Mediterranean beaches. It consists of 3 terminals – 2 international and 1 domestic – and handles more than 15 million passengers yearly (most of whom are international visitors). Constructed between the years of 1996-1998, the airport has seen explosive growth in its passenger numbers and currently accounts for a good percentage of all tourists that go into Turkey. It was selected the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ by the Airports Council International in 2011.
Getting around
Antalya Airport is located less than 15 kilometres from Antalya’s city centre, and therefore transportation to and fro is very easy. For those seeking ultimate flexibility, rent a car from the airport and drive straight into the city – it is connected by a good road and takes only about 20 minutes. Otherwise, a variety of other transport options are available. There are numerous bus services that connect the airport to Antalya’s city centre, as well as the wider region. If not, taxis are also readily available outside the airport.
Once in Antalya, transportation gets even easier. The city is served by an extensive network of buses that go almost anywhere within the city, and there are also dolmuş, which act like shared taxis that ply a certain route and are cheaper than regular taxis. Otherwise, you can also take the tram for a nice slow scenic ride as it passes through many of the popular tourist attractions on its route.
What to see and do
The city of Antalya sits on the Turkish Riviera – often referred to as the ‘Turquoise Coast’, for obvious reasons – in southwest Turkey, just by the Mediterranean Sea. It looks just like you’d imagine a coastal Mediterranean city would look: full of gorgeous white sandy beaches, with clear blue waters and almost year-long sunshine. It is the perfect place for a relaxing bath in the sun and sea or some water sports, if you are so inclined, and one of the top tourist destinations in the world today (it was ranked the third most visited city in 2013, behind Paris and London). Don’t miss the picture-perfect Konyaaltı Beach (Konyaaltı Plaji), one of the main beaches of the city, with its gentle turquoise waves and rough sands.
Besides its natural coastal beauty, Antalya is also famous for its historical buildings and structures. Visit Kaleiçi, also known as Old Antalya, whose walls surrounded the entire city of Antalya until modern times. It was once a Roman town, before becoming Byzantine, Seljuk Turkish, and Ottoman, and therefore houses some very interesting and diverse ancient structures from each of these eras. For a quick history lesson, this tour takes you through a variety of old architecture is priceless.
