Barcelona Airport – also known as Aeroport del Prat – is one of the busiest airports in Europe and serves the city of Barcelona, capital of Catalonia. Though there are multiple airports serving Catalonia, Barcelona Airport is considered one of the most convenient as it is only 14km away from the city. In 2012, Barcelona Airport was ranked the 32nd busiest airport in the world, handling more than 30 million passengers in that year alone. The airport’s most active route – named “Air Bridge” – is the flight connecting Barcelona to Madrid, as it is used dozens of times a week. Though the airport’s main connections are to European cities, flights from Barcelona Airport also go to the Americas, North Africa and Asiatic Southeast.

Getting around

To get from Aeroport del Prat to the city of Barcelona, tourists have a couple of options. They can choose to take the Aerobus – an express bus service that connects the airport to the city centre and arrives every 15 minutes or so – or take a shared minibus with other passengers going into the city. If not, the RENFE train that runs from the airport can get you to the heart of the city in about 25 minutes, and runs every half an hour or so. For those wanting comfort and convenience, airport taxis can also readily be found at ranks outside the terminals.

What to see and do

Few cities can encompass some of the best beaches, sports, shopping, entertainment and dining options in the world all at once, and Barcelona is one of them. Consistently rated amongst the best in all the above arenas, there is something in Barcelona city for just about everyone. Love art and architecture? Antonio Gaudi’s magnificent and eccentric works are scattered all around the city. Big sports fan? Barcelona FC – one of the most prominent and successful football clubs globally – is based here, and you can visit their stadium and museum. For foodies, there is no lack of gastronomic delights in this city that houses some of the best Catalan restaurants and tapas bars in the world. Shopaholic at heart? Take a stroll along the famous Las Ramblas, a lively pedestrian mall lined with merchants selling all sorts of wares, as well as street performers pretending to be statues.

The capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia, Barcelona is the one of Spain’s largest and most developed cities. It has a fascinating history; founded by Romans, the city was under Muslim rule for 200 years before being taken over by the Christian reconquest. To have a glimpse of what the city was like in the past, visit the Gothic Quarter (or Barri Gòtic, in Catalan), Barcelona’s old city, which used to be a Roman village and contains remnants and artefacts of the glorious past.
