At a distance of 37 km from the capital city of Kampala, Entebbe is one of the most popular cities in Uganda. Located on a peninsula of Lake Victoria (which is the largest lake in Africa), the city served as the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda before the country got its independence in the year 1962. The city is famous as being the site of Entebbe Airport, which is the largest and busiest airport in the country. The city also serves as the official residence of the President of Uganda and the government State House is also located here. The city is located at an elevation of 1,180 meter above sea level, has a total land area of 56.2 km2 and presently around 79,700 people call Entebbe their home.. The official languages of Entebbe are English and Swahili, although multiple other languages are also spoken in the country.

Featuring a tropical rainforest climate, Entebbe experiences relatively constant temperatures (average of 210C) for most part of the year. Amakula Kampala International Film Festival which focuses on African Cinema and conducts workshops for young actors to learn techniques from the best film makers in Africa is a major festival in Entebbe. The Kampala International Jazz Festival is another important festival held once year at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort by Lake Victoria.

City Attraction

With plenty of history and unmatched natural beauty, there is a lot to see and do in Entebbe. Entebbe Botanical Gardens is one of the city's prime attractions. Opened for public since 1898 it serves as home to more than 320 varieties of exotic plant species along with many birdlife and mammals. Here tourists can also enjoy bird watching. Uganda Wildlife Education Center is a must visit place if you want to know more about the breeding, recuperation and rehabilitation of Ugandan animals that were rescued from the clutches of illegal hunters and poachers. A few activities are conducted inside the center, the details of which can be gathered from the reception. This also serves as the national zoo of Uganda. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is also a popular tourist spot in Entebbe and was founded in the year 1988 by Jane Goodall in order to serve as a refuge for over 45 rescued chimpanzees. Various trips and activities are also available here and packed lunches for the trip too are supplied on request.

Your trip to Entebbe is incomplete without a half day trip to Mabamba Swamp which is the most popular and convenient place to see the elusive Shoebill. 18 holed golf course at Entebbe, called as Entebbe Golf Course, is the oldest golf course in East Africa. The gold course can provision for various outdoor and indoor games including 2 tennis courts, 1 basketball court, a cricket oval, badminton, darts and snooker, which can be enjoyed here. Some of the popular activities that tourists can enjoy here are – fishing and sunset cruises at Lake Victoria.

 

Eating and Shopping

The city of Entebbe is not a multicultural hub and offers only decent options of eating and drinking. Vegetables, potatoes, yams, bananas, tropical fruits along with pork, chicken and fish are used in most of the local dishes. Posho, Sim-sim, Matooke, Luwombo, Malewa, Kikomando, Samusa, Mugati naamaggi, Nsenene, Nswaa and Rolex are the local delicacies which can be enjoyed in Entebbe. 4 Points, The Gately, China Garden and Nickey's Pizza on Kampala Road, Abyssinia Cottage on Airport Road, Goretties Pizza at Lake Victoria and Faze 3 are the best places in Entebbe to enjoy a wonderful meal.

 While there a few shopping malls and boutiques in Entebbe, the number are limited. Entebbe is not really a great place to shop and if you are keen on shopping then you should travel to Kampala, which is the capital of Uganda and is just 37 km from Entebbe. Fresh fruits and vegetable, traditional drums crafted by royal drum makers, spices, grains, legumes and handcrafted household items , hand-made paper products, rust-red bark cloth, crafts made from the horn of Ankole cattle and tea and coffee are some of the things you can buy in Uganda. National Theatre Craft Market, Buganda Road Women's Craft Market, Nakasero Market, Owino Market and the Tuesday market at Kitoro are the major shopping markets located in Entebbe and Kampala.
