The capital of Ukraine, Kiev is located on the Dnieper River in the north central part of the country, is also the largest city of Ukraine. Eastern Europe's industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural center, Kiev is the 8^th largest city in Europe and boasts of extensive infrastructure and highly advanced system of public transport. Historically, the city is one of the oldest in Europe and serves as a commercial center as early as the 5th century. The city saw its downfall under the reign of Varangian in the middle of 9th century and Mogul invasion in 1240, but its glory was restored during the Russian Empire's Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century. The city is situated at an elevation of 179 meters above sea level and encompasses 839 km² of land area. Serving as home to more than 2,847,200 people, it is Ukraine’s richest city. Ukrainian is the official and most commonly spoken language in Kiev followed by Russian. Ukranians are the largest ethnic group living in Kiev followed by Russians, Jews, Belarusians, Poles, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Tatars, Georgians and Moldovans.

Overview

The city is served by two international airports - the Boryspil Airport which is located 30 km from Kiev and the Zhulyany Airport which is located on the southern outskirts of the city. Currently 32 airlines operate regular flights to and from the airports. The city has a humid continental type of climate which is marked by moderately warm summer and super cold winters. December, January, and February are the coldest months of the year and temperature can dip as low as −4.6 °C. The warm summer months from June to August are the best months to visit the city and the temperature averages 13.8 to 24.8 °C. The ground of the city remain covered in snow from mid-November till the end of March with the frost-free period lasting 200 days on average. Some of the major festival celebrates in the city are - Lviv City Day in May, Victory Day in May, Kiev Summer Music Festival in July, Ukrainian World Music Festival in June-July, Sorochinsky Yarmarok in August, Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24, Koktebel International Jazz Festival in September and Molodist International Film Festival in October.

City Attractions

When in Kiev, there is a lot that tourists can see and do in the city. St Crylli’s Monastery is am major tourist place in Kiev which is a small church going back to the 12th century and Paintings of the famous Mikhail Vrubel are on display here. Kyiv’S Parks is a beautiful park located in the center of the city and is ideal for short walks. Mariyinsky Palace, gorgeous building of Kyiv Academic Puppet Theater is located close to the park. Golosiyivsky Park is a unique nature park that greets the tourists with picturesque natural landscape and fresh air. Eating and Shopping

Majority of the places in Kiev serve traditional Ukrainian food, but a decent number of multi cuisine restaurants can also be found here. Pork followed by beef and chicken are the base of most of the Ukrainian dishes. Borsch, a traditional soup is one of the most popular dish in Ukraine and a must try for those holidaying in Kiev.  Chicken Kiev, Shuba , Vinihret, Vesnianyi, Pid, Oseledets  Rozsolnyk, Pelmeni, Vareniki, Blini, Ukrainian Sour Cream Poppy seed cake and Kievsky Tort are among the local delicies one should definietly try. Kvass, Uzvar, Kefir, Beer, Mead and Horilka are popular drinks in Kiev. Olivia, Kafka, Koza Dereza, Imbyr, Il Molino, Al Faro, Landysh, L'Entrecote, Goodman and Napule are populaar restaurnat in Kiev.

The city is filled with many malls, hig end boutiques, supermarkets, large departmental stores, specialised git shops and street markets, from where people can buy plenty of stuffs. Bottles of vodka and gorilka, which is a Ukrainian variant of vodka are perfect as souvenirs. Shevchenka Boulevard, Kreschatik Street, Krasnoarmeyskaya Street are the major places to buy hand-made traditional artifact or soviet collectables. The city is also famous for its paintings, amber jewellery, chocolates, dolls in traditional dress and unique creations of craftrmen which can be bought from the Andriivsky Uzviz street. The sellers generally qute high price, and bargaining is recommended.
