Nadi – Way to Enter the Exotic Fiji

Situated on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu, Nadi is the third largest city in Fiji and famous for being the center for Hinduism and Islam in Fiji. A charming multi-cultural town, Nadi is also one of the largest and most visited tourist destinations in Fiji. Spreading on a land area of 7.8 km2, the city is home to more than 42,284 residents, as per the data collected in 2007. The city is surrounded by the Nadi River and Viseisei village on its west and Sri Siva Subramaniya temple on the east. The city serves as the entry point to Fiji as the only international airport in the country is located at the outskirts of the town. The history of the town goes back to 1947, when it was established by the Government of Fiji. Nadi is also known for having the highest concentration of hotels and resorts than any other town in the country. While Fijian is the official language spoken by majority of the people, English and Fiji Hindi are also spoken widely.

Overview

Nadi International Airport is the major international airport located at a distance of 9 km from the town. This is the major international airport in the country and all international flights land at this airport. Similar to most parts of the island, Nadi too has a tropical type of climate which is marked by warm weather all year round; the variation in climate during the year is minimal and can be visited all the year round. There are basically two seasons – warm season from November to April which is accompanied by heavier rainfall and the cool season from May to October and most of the cyclones hit during the cool season. Some of the major festival and events celebrated in Nadi include - Bula festival in July, Island Chill Suva Marathon in August, Musket Cove Fiji Regatta Week in September, Fiji International in October and FNU'S International Food Festival in October.

City Attractions

The most illustrious and charming attraction in Nadi is the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple, which is a pilgrim site and Southern hemisphere’s largest Hindu temple. The town is famed for its long stretch of beaches which are not only ideal for relaxing but also offers numerous options of water sports. The half kilometers long beach, Wailioaloa Beach, is the best beach in Nadi. Bounded by Travellers Beach Resort in North and Culb Fiji in South, the beach is very popular for swimming and enjoying a beer at the beach is an enjoyable experience. Wailoaloa & Newtown Beaches are also popular in Nadi.

Nausori Highlands Rd is a great place for long drives and on the way you can sight numerous villages and natural attractions. When in Nadi, do not miss visiting the Garden of the Sleeping Giant which is famed for its 30 to 40 varieties of Asian orchids and cattleya hybrids and is a delightful place for horticultural enthusiasts. Guns of Lomolomo, situated at the foot of Queens Road, are another major draw where tourists can climb up the hill to enjoy commanding views of the region. Viseisei, considered to be the oldest settlement in the country and Vuda Point, which an idea place for yachting are among the major attractions that tourists can explore on their trip to Nadi. Diving can also be enjoyed at the Vadu Point. When in Nadi, you should also enjoy a day trip to Denarau Island and Mamanuca Islands which are other hot spots for tourists near Nadi.

Eating and Shopping

Nadi, being a tourist town offers various restaurants and eating joints serving lip smacking delicacies from all over the world. The people of Nadi eat fresh fruits and vegetable and sea food forms a major part of their diet. Kokoda, Lovo, Duruka, Taro and Nama are the local food items that are used to churn out the most delicious dishes that tourists should not miss savoring in Nadi. Fijian lovo night, Downtown area, Namaka and Martintar near Queen Rd and Port Denarau are the best places in Nadi to enjoy a hearty meal.

The small town of Nadi might not be a cosmopolitan hub but it sure offers the tourists with some of the most exotic and indigenous shopping items that you will not find anywhere else. There are no shopping malls or luxury boutique shops and most of the action takes place at the Main Street in the town. Traditional handicrafts, tropical clothing, electronics, black pearl jewellery, carved wooden swords, perfumes and paintings made by local are some of the major shopping buys in Nadi.
