Discover Palma - Majorca
The City of Palma is Mallorca’s only proper city and the capital of the Spanish Balearic Islands. The island of Mallorca is the holiday destination of choice to the Spanish Royal Family as well as a long-time favourite holiday destination for many Europeans for many years now. It is the economic and cultural hub of Mallorca and acts as a charming base for anyone wanting to experience and discover this incredibly beautiful and sunny region of the world.
What to See & Do
The city has a long history. Originally founded as a Roman camp, it fell under Islamic rule in the late Middle Ages when the Moors colonised it.
Palma’s Old Town is an appealing maze of narrow streets that are a delight to explore on foot. A must-see for any visitor to Palma is the large 14th century castle, Castell de Bellver, which was originally built on the ruins of a Muslim site. The castle is in a unique circular architectural style, 3 large towers, a central courtyard and other exquisite architectural features throughout its interior and exterior. The castle also gives visitors one of the best views and most photographic shots of Palma bay.
If you’ve come to Mallorca to enjoy the beaches, then you’ll surely not be disappointed. Why not start at Mallorca’s finest beach at Es Trenc, a large undeveloped stretch of beach and a popular choice for most tourists and locals alike. For those wanting to escape the beaches and the city, take a trip to the mountains of Majorca, otherwise known as Serra de Tramuntana. Here you will find a craggy, limestone mountain range stretching the length of the northwest coast of the island. A trip to this part of the islands never fails to blow most visitors away. It has a stunningly beautiful landscape.
Getting Around
Located just 9km from the city centre, the Palma’s city airport provides daily flights from many European cities on national and budget airlines. Empresa Nubucipal de Transportes Urbanes de Palma de Mallorca (EMT) line 1 bus runs between the sea port, the city centre and the airport every 15 minutes (bus fares are 3 euros). This can be purchased from the bus driver. Taxis from the airport to most locations on the island cost between 29 to 35 euros and can also be booked online.
The local bus service: Empresa Nubucipal de Transportes Urbanes de Palma de Mallorca (EMT) runs frequently to most of the major beaches and city centre areas. Palma also offers a sightseeing bus (No.50 on the EMT Bus map), which costs 15 euros per adult and 6.50 euros per child. The route that the bus takes includes most of the major tourist attractions; the buses are double-deckers and have a free audio tour included with ticket. For longer distances and travel around the island, why not rent a car or join a tour group. Access to both is pretty easy from various travel agencies and hotels in the city.
