What to see and do
There is always something exciting and fun about Doha. And this is true any time of the year. Qatar has a wealth of leisure and recreational activities.
From jogging along the Corniche waterfront where traditional dhow boats wait to pick up their passengers to enjoying the many parks Doha has to offer, Qatar is a place where visitors can find outdoor activities to keep fit. Its lush green parks and many sporting facilities are open to the public.
Not to be missed are its pristine beaches. The Qatar peninsula has beaches galore with a 563 kilometre-long sandy coastline with numerous small islets, sand bars and reefs. Just as enticing are the full-day dhow and fishing trips offered by tour companies including trips to Safliya Island and water sports which are available at an extra cost. These trips usually include lunch. For a dose of culture, visit the Museum of Islamic Art, a stunning building designed by I.M. Pei, famed for designing the modern wing of the Louvre in Paris. It houses works from more than 200 years of Islamic civilisation. A historical landmark is Fort Zubarah, an 18th century fort in the north of the country.
Shop at Souq Waqif, that offers the bustle and vitality of an old traditional souq with perfectly replicated buildings featuring traditional architecture. Here you can buy handicraft, spices, perfumes and fabric.
Less than half an hour away from the airport are The Singing Sand Dunes. Hear a humming sound and feel vibrations through your feet with each step your take on the sand.
