Who doesn’t remember the official mascot of Air India “Maharaja” beckoning one and all onto the ‘palace in the sky’? It is one of the most popular icons of contemporary India and identifies heavily with Air India, the only state owned and flag carrier airline of India. The roots of Air India lie in the pre independence Tata airlines, which was later bought over by the Government and rechristened as Air India international. Set up exclusively to take care of international flights, upon merger with Indian Airlines and its fully owned subsidiary, Alliance Air, since 27th February, 2011; Air India has entered the domestic sector as well. Together Air India (for domestic), Air India Cargo, Air India Expressand Air India Regional form the Air India Limited.

Air India Express is the airline's international low-cost subsidiary which was established in 2005. Air India Express aircrafts will have single class economy with a capacity of around 180 seats. The corporate office of Air India is at Indian Airlines house in the parliament street of New Delhiwith two domestic hubs in Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbaiand Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi; a third hub at the Dubai International Airport in plans. Air India also offers full services such as in-flight entertainment, complimentary meal and champagne (for first class) along with a frequent flyer programme. Despite tough competition in the domestic sector from low cost carriers like Spicejet, IndiGo, GoAirand JetAirwaysand financial upheaval since merger with Indian Airlines; Air India has been consistently improving its performance, experiencing a jump of more than 6% market share in the year 2012 claiming a big chunk of 20.8% of the market. Air India is the proud winner of multiple noteworthy awards over the years such as Best CSR Initiative (2010), The Mercury Award (1994 and 2003) Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Award (2010); Air India is also one of the few airlines recognized for its environment and ozone friendly processes with the Montreal Protocol Public Awareness Award by the UN (2010).


With 95 in-service aircrafts, Air India boasts of a relatively young fleet of 31 Boeing Aircrafts and 64 Airbus aircrafts. Air India Express operates a fleet of Next Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

How to Check-in

Air India check-in counters open 2 hours prior to departure. Passengers need to check-in 1-2 hours before since check-in closes 45 minutes before departure. Passengers can also web check-in from all cities except Srinagar and Jammu, beginning from 48 before departure up to 2 hours before departure of flight. A maximum of 9 people can web check-in via the online feature. Passengers can also check-in via the mobile, kiosks and even tele check-in (only Executive Class and Frequent flyers from metro cities).

Baggage Allowances and Fees

Economy Class passengers are allowed 25 kg of checked-in baggage, while Business and First Class passengers are allowed 35 kg and 40 kg respectively. Cabin baggage should not exceed 8 kg in weight and 55x40X20 cm in dimensions.

Booking Fees

Air India serves Asian Veg, Hindu (Non-veg), Kosher, Jain, Vegetarian and Muslim meals for passengers flying with them. The airline also offers an extensive variety of medical meals such as bland, diabetic, gluten-free, low cholesterol, non-lactose, seafood, vegan meals, meals for children and much more to suit the sensibilities and tastes of passengers. How to Check-in

For domestic as well as international travelers, Air India’s check-in counter opens 4 hours before the flight schedule and closes 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time of flight. At the time of check-in, a printout of the itinerary or SMS confirming the flight details must be produced along with a valid photo ID proof. Air India also offers the facility of online check in facility 36 hours to 4 hours prior to the scheduled flight.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

Air India‘s free checked baggage weight limits for domestic flights are 40kg and 35kg for first class and executive class respectively, 20 -15 kg for economy class and 10kg for infants. For international flights baggage allowance is 40kg for first class, 30kg for executive class and 20kg for economy class. These rates further vary for flights to US and Canada. Excess baggage charges at the check-in counter are 1.5% of the highest normal direct one-way economy class fare for every additional kilo for domestic travel and for international travel; the charges vary as per the destination countries. In flight baggage weight allowance is that of 8 kg per passenger. Prohibited items include corrosives, aerosols, explosives, inflammable liquids or solids, sharp instruments, fish, poisons or biohazard substances.


Air India fleet comprises of both Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Boeing 747 and Airbus A310 planes, designed to accommodate 180 passengers approximately. Air India also offers the facility of online check in, allowing you to choose your seats before you board the plane.

Booking Fees
