Vietnam Airlines – Fly With One of the Oldest Cariers

Vietnam Airlines is the main airline carrier in Vietnam and also the national carrier. It serves both domestic flights and international, being based in Long Bien District, Hanoi. The main hub is at Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi with additional hubs at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Da Nang International Airport and a future hub at Long Thanh International Airport.

Vietnam Airlines is completely state owned and at this moment it serves a total of 52 destinations, out of which 21 are domestic, 28 international and 3 are charter routes. The airline company also has various codeshare agreements for various destinations.

Vietnam Airlines was first established in 1956 as ‘Vietnam Civil Aviation’ for solely civilian purposes. Although the development of the company was seriously hindered by the Vietnam War (1954 to 1975) after that it saw a rise in business, becoming Vietnam’s flag carrier in 1993 when it was also turned into a state enterprise. The lift of the trade embargo in 1994 allowed the airlines to purchase western built aircrafts, substantially increasing the business.

2007 saw plans of privatizing part of the Vietnam Airlines however the plan was never carried out. Subsequently with the purchase of 20 Airbus A321s and 10 Airbus A350 XWBs the company became the biggest Airbus carriers in Asia at that moment.

The total fleet of Vietnam Airline rises to 89 vessels, however some of them are leased out so the number of operating vessels under the Vietnam Airlines flag is actually 77. The total fleet includes 55 Airbus A321-200, 10 Airbus A330-200, 16 ATR 72-500 and 8 Boeing 777-200ER. The current fleet is expected to increase to 110 ships in 2015 and up to 170 by 2020.

Although the real business started for Vietnam Airlines after 1994 when the trade embargo was lifted it has done a very good job in the short period. It has made the World Airline Awards list of top 100 air carriers since 2012 holding the following positions:

·         47 in 2012

·         53 in 2013

·         58 in 2014

The 2015 awards and lists are yet to be announced.
