Driving tips

  • Driving is on the left side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle.

  • Mumbai roads are uniform at all places. The width and quality differs from place to place, and all roads are largely congested and chaotic. Lane-splitting, over speeding, bumper-to-bumper driving and traffic, swerving, etc. is very common on Mumbai roads. If tourists cannot handle it, it is honestly better to get a driver equipped to deal with it.

  • Apart from private cars, tourists also need to look out for private and public buses, taxis, auto rickshaws, and motorbikes. None of the drivers adhere to traffic rules, so tourists need to be extra careful.

Car renting tips

  • Tourists should make note of all extra charges in order to not get ripped off during final payment.

  • It is better if tourists book cars online beforehand.

Tourist drivers need to be of 18 years of age, hold a valid licence from the country of residence and an International Driving Permit as well.

Places to visit

Mumbai has its own old-world and cosmopolitan charm. Places to visit off the island include the Elephanta Caves and the Haji Ali Dargah. Elephanta Caves can be accessed via ferry from the iconic Gateway of India which was built in dedication to King George V of England. Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the temple of Babulnath and Siddhivinayak Temple, Bombay High Court, India’s first sporting venue Brabourne Stadium, the famous Wankhede Stadium, Vihar Lake, Powai lake, Girgaum Chowpatty and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. A drive across Mumbai’s newest infrastructure addition, the Bandra Worli Sea Link, gives fantastic views of the city skyline, especially at night.
