What to see & do

Tiruchirappalli is also known as Tiruchi or Trichy and is located in the culturally rich south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Tamil is spoken in Tiruchirappalli, and many of the locals are conversant in English. Major roads, rail networks and a quickly developing and expanding international airport all help it to connect with most of the major towns and cities in India and as well as most of the smaller getaways in Tamil Nadu. The city’s history begins in the 3rd century BC when the Cholas ruled it, since then it has had many different rulers including the British.

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, considered the foremost temple for Vaishnavites, is found here. It is also considered the largest temple complex in India. The complex’s main features are the huge, elaborate and colourful towers (Raja Gopuram). The temple is located 8 km from the city centre and is easily accessible by bus. Other notable temples in the area are the Jambukeswarar, Brahmapureeswarar and the Rock Fort temples. Any visit to India wouldn’t be complete without a view of its famous bathing Ghats, which are important both for religious reasons as well as community and cultural reasons. At the Ghats on the banks of the River Cauvery you’re sure to catch a number of different sights, from religious sermons, children playing, to people bathing and washing their clothes.

Getting Around

Arrange a pick up from your hotel, hire a auto-rickshaw or taxi from just outside the arrival gate or catch a local bus from just across the street from the arrival gate to get to the city from the airport. The local bus would be the cheapest option but rickshaws and taxis here are fairly inexpensive. Just remember to bargain before starting the journey. The main Railway Station at Tiruchirappalli has good rail links to most of the major towns and cities in south India and further afield.

The best and fastest ways of getting around town are by auto rickshaw or the local bus. The bus network in Tiruchirappalli is pretty well developed which allows most visitors to get to any one of their preferred attractions efficiently. Tiruchirappalli has some major sights to see outside the town itself, such as the historical city of Thanjavur, famous for its Brihadeeshwara Temple (Big Temple), located 60km away from Tiruchirappalli, and Pudukkottai, famous for its carvings and paintings that date back centuries, located 45km from Tiruchirappalli. These places and all other places of interest in the state of Tamil Nadu are serviced by excellent and regular local bus links.
