Discover Mauritius

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, better identified as just SSR Airport for short, serves as the primary gateway to the African island of Mauritius on the Indian Ocean. The airport sits approximately 48km shy of the heart of capital city Port Louis, and houses the base operations of the country’s official flag carrier, Air Mauritius. Previously recognised as Plaisance Airport, the airport was rebranded and christened after the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in honour of his dedication and influence in leading the country to independence. With the addition of a new terminal in 2013, SSR Airport now hosts operations from two main passenger terminals, covering far reaching routes across multiple continents. Some of the destinations that SSR Airport connects with include Paris, Dubai, Mumbai, Johannesburg and Singapore. Within the airport premises, passengers can also find a myriad of amenities such as retail and dining options, a post office counter, lost baggage services, and complimentary WiFi access courtesy of SSR Airport. Lounges are also available for passengers seeking respite before scooting off on their next flight.

How to get around in Mauritius

SSR Airport is accessible given the decent public and private modes of transport available. Airport taxis are the most common means of commute to and from the airport, and are specially scheduled in line with flight landings so as to cater to the influx of passengers at any one time. Alternatively, passengers may also opt to take a bus into downtown Mauritius. Bus services depart twice every hour, providing an inexpensive yet convenient way of travelling into the city which all budget travellers will greatly appreciate.

Within the island itself, buses are the most common form of commute around too, adopted even by the locals to get around. Visitors will be pleased to know that air-conditioned buses have been added to the current fleet to increase the levels of comfort while exploring the city. Fares are to be paid on board the bus to a conductor, who will determine your fare depending on where you are headed to. For a more private means of getting around, taxis do sometimes offer tours and will ferry you to some of the best places within the island. Do sign up with licensed operators though.

What to see and do
