Melbourne Airport - also known as Tullamarine Airport - serves the city of Melbourne and is one of the busiest airports in Australia. As the only international airport serving the region, it is the home base of many airlines such as Jetstar Airways and Tiger Airways Australia, and offers direct flights to a great many international destinations worldwide. The airport consists of 4 terminals - two of which serve domestic flights, one which serves budget flights and one for international flights - and handles up to 30 million passengers yearly.
Tullamarine Airport has won many awards since becoming operational in 1970 - it received the International Air Transport Association Eagle award for service, multiple National Tourism Awards, and even Skytrax’s World Airport Award for Best Airport Hotel in Australia/Asia Pacific.
Getting around
Located less than 25 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, transportation to and from the airport is a piece of cake. For tourists, a popular option for making this commute is the SkyBus, a comfortable express bus that connects the airport to the city centre speedily. The bus runs every 10 minutes, and tickets cost only about $18. Otherwise, public buses also run from Terminal 1 of the airport into the city at a lower price (with more stops in between).
What to see and do
Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia, and the capital of the state of Victoria. Vibrant, colourful and exciting, Melbourne offers everything from high-end cuisine, lush parks and gardens even within the city, chic fashion boutiques, hippie cafes and bars as well as historic architecture and a bustling arts scene. Have a stroll in the gorgeous Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne for some fresh air and lush greenery, take a look at the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral that has been around since the 1800s, visit the Old Melbourne Gaol – museum and former prison – or shop to your heart’s content at one of the coolest and largest open air markets in the world, the Queen Victoria Market (so significant to Melbourne’s culture that it is listed on Australia’s Victorian Heritage Register!)
But if nature is what you’re looking for, you should head to Geelong city from Tullamarine airport instead. A port city named after the aboriginal name for land or cliffs ‘jilliong’, Geelong offers some spectacular natural beauty in the form of stunning surf beaches, lakes and other natural formations. Relax on the beach or ride the waves in one of the many sandy beaches along the coast, have a look at the uniquely formed You Yangs – granite ridges that rise up to 360 metres high – or have a relaxing day at Lake Connewarre, an estuarine lake surrounded by mangroves and just teeming with diverse flora and fauna.
