The city is at an elevation of 149 meters above sea level and has a land area of 686 km². Called as ‘The Live Music Capital of the World’, Austin became the capital of Texas in 1839. It was then known as Waterloo and was renamed soon after in order to commemorate Stephen F. Austin, who was the first secretary of state and is called as the 'Father of Texas'. The locals of the city are known as Austinites and speak English as their main language.
