Bahrain Airport is an international airport, located on Muharraq, an island on the northern tip of Bahrain. Presently, about forty-three carriers serve the airport, including Gulf Air that has made Bahrain Airport its primary air hub. Busiest routes from Bahrain Airport include flights to Dubai, Kuwait, Doha, Abu Dhabi and many more.
Getting Around
The airport is located approximately 6 kilometres north of the capital, Manama. Most hotels offer complimentary bus transfer services for their guests to and from the airport. Otherwise, board a taxi from outside the airport terminal to reach the city centre, which takes around 15 minutes of travelling time. Avoid taking an unmetered taxi, as they tend to overcharge tourists. Renting a car is another alternative; familiar car rental companies like Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Avis and more are open at Bahrain Airport.
In the city centre, the best way to get around is by driving. The public bus network may be difficult to decipher, making navigation tricky. Moreover, bus services do not take passengers directly to most tourist attractions, and are not fully reliable. Travellers will be better off taking a taxi or renting a car. If choosing the former, always check that taxis are charging by the meter before boarding. For tourists heading to multiple destinations, car rental may be a more economically efficient alternative. Roads are well signposted, making getting around easy.
What to See and Do
In Manama, get to know Bahrain by exploring the Bahrain National Museum. The museum is the country’s most popular tourist attraction. Learn from exhibits recounting traditional life in Bahrain, and view Dilmun burial mounds and archaeological finds showcased in the premises. Ancient artefacts excavated range from agate and carnelian beads to earthenware burial jars. All displays are labelled in Arabic and English, allowing visitors to explore them at their own time and pace.
Visit the Al-Fatih Mosque, the country’s largest mosque. Guided tours of the mosque are available for those interested to learn about it. Local craftsmen built the impressive domed structure with marble from Italy, glass from Austria, and teakwood from India; admire the beautiful interior design and amazing architecture.
A short 10-minute drive from central Manama is the Qal’at al-Bahrain. The formidable Bahrain Fort was constructed by the Portuguese, as part of defences bordering the Gulf, in the 16th century. Take a walk around the structure to understand the history behind the ancient ruins. Start exploring a few hours before dusk, and catch the view as night falls. When the sky turns dark, the moated fort looks picturesque with its illuminated lights reflecting in the water. Soak in the stunning views while enjoying the sea breeze.
Bahrain also has tourist attractions like the Wahoo Water Park, Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park, and go karting arenas like the Viva Karting Bahrain and Bahrain International Circuit, for family fun and entertainment
