The second largest city and capital of China, Beijing is among the world’s top tourist destinations. Situated at an elevation of 43.5 meters above sea level, the city is home to more than 21,150,000 residents, which makes it the 3rd most populous city in the world. The city was earlier called Peking and since times immemorial, it has served as an important seat of power for all the dynasties that have ruled here. The history of Beijing goes back three millennia and the city also served as the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty are two of the many dynasties which ruled here. Beijing dialect of the Mandarin version of spoken Chinese is spoken by the people. English is also spoken widely.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the major airport serving the city and all flights coming to Beijing land at this airport. The airport is located around 12 km from the city center and it the second busiest airports in the world after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The city of Beijing experiences the dry monsoon influenced humid continental climate which is characterized by hot and humid summer and cold and dry winter. July is the warmest month of the year with temperatures averaging round 26.2 °C while January when the temperature dip to −3.7 °C, is the coldest month of the year. The city roughly has four seasons – Summer lasting from June to August, Autumn during September and October, Winters starting from November till March followed by Spring in April and May. While the city offers something for the tourists, all the year round, but autumn and spring is the loveliest season to visit Beijing. Some of the major festivals celebrates in Beijing are - Beijing International Long-Distance Running Festival in April, Beijing International Beer Festival in July-August, Beijing International Imported Food Exhibition in June, Beijing’s Daxing Watermelon Festival in May, The Grand View Garden Fair in February and Baiyun Temple Fair in February.

City Attractions

When in Beijing the most important attractions include the UNESCO declared World Heritage Sites - the Forbidden City (ancient capital city), Temple of Heaven (one of the holiest places), Summer Palace (largest royal garden in China), Ming Tombs (burial site of 13 out of 17 emperors of Ming Dynasty), Zhoukoudian (historical site famous for its cave system), Great Wall (longest wall and manmade structure in the world), and the Grand Canal (longest canal or artificial river in the world) are the must see destinations. Tiananmen Square is a major attraction in Beijing and is the largest square of its kind in the world. Located in the city center, it is the venue for the major parades and rallies held in the city. Beijing Opera, Olympic Sites and Hutongs are some of the other attractions in Beijing.

Beihai, Shichahai, Zhongnanhai, Jingshan and Zhongshan are among the most beautiful parks in Beijing. Temple of Earth, Temple of Moon and Temple of Earth along with Dongyue Temple, Tanzhe Temple and Miaoying Temple are some of the many pilgrim destinations in Beijing. The people of the city enjoy what is called the Beijing cuisine. Beijing is a metropolitan hub and thousands of restaurants are available to serve the tourists of all budget.
